All friends are stirring that Katrina is going to slow the flow of oil and gas and that the prices will be up by the morning time.  Just filled up today and have an extra 30 gallons so I should be set for a couple weeks.

I take a stab and guess it will make a 15% jump at the pump within the next 72 hours.

With oil futures blasting through $70 and
a large hunk of the domestic oil refining and
transport capability of the US about to be
obliterated, I'd say "affect" is a bit of an
understatement.

I agree there is going to be a short term spike.  $70 a barrel and then it will slide some after Labor day.

Yes it will! There is alot of oil and chemical infrastucture in that area! Used to pick up alot of plastic resin from there. At nite,the sky glows from all the refineries and chemical plants along the coast and rivers.

Katrina was "unmitigated bad news" for motorists across the nation because it shut down offshore production of at least 1 million barrels of oil daily and threatened refinery and import operations around New Orleans, said oil analyst Peter Beutel. He predicted crude oil could top $70 a barrel by Monday or Tuesday

Analysts see Katrina as 'perfect storm' for already high energy prices

<snip>

The impact was immediate Sunday night when electronic trading resumed on the New York Mercantile Exchange, as crude oil futures spiked $4.50 US per barrel, putting the cost above $70 for the first time since oil began trading there in 1983.
