My venerable old maple (probalby 300-400 years old) is beeing killed by something.   The bark at the bottom of the trunk looks affected, so I went and picked some off, and there are scores of these little buggers burrowing and nesting under the bark.  Anyone know anything about these bugs, if they kill maple trees, or what can be done about them?

thanks so much for any guidance...

I would recommend taking one to your county extension office.  Most likely they'll have resources on the beetle and how to rid your tree of it.  Best of luck.  Patty

You need to contact a reputable arborist familiar with your area.

Orthene.  Fast. Please follow all label directions closely. To do otherwise is a Ferderal Offense.  And please, please don't be a litter bug!!

Get some Mrs. Butterworths maple syrup and put it in a pan, run a trail from the base of the tree to the pan or pans. It will lure the bugs from the tree where it's less work to obtain the tasty syrup. They will get fat and lazy and leave the tree alone, register them all as Democrats then nuke the pans from orbit or use Tannerite.

Call the Ag Extension office in your area or a local University Entomologist

HELP! What beatle is this that's killing my maple tree?

Probably Ringo. He's always got too much time on his hands.

+1

There may be a systemic issue and the beetles are just taking advantage.
