Exactly. General Discussion is General.
Do a speed test. I have a cable modem at home and T1 at work. [url]computingcentral.msn.com/internet/speedtest.asp[/url] 746.6 kbps right now. Definately NOT T1 speeds. I am at my friends house, in my neighborhood, with a dedicated line and it is [b]19.1 kbps![/b] With a 56k modem! It sucks, especially after being on a cable modem or T1.

from computingcentral: 40800 -got to be something wrong there, I do not think that I got the full bandwidth of one of our T3s here at work. BTW, DSL seems to be a bit better than cable modems IMHO, due to your not sharing a network segment with your neighbors that also get the cable modems |

My local cable service has just upgraded their system and is now offering cable internet service, how expensive are cable modems supposed to be?? Are they really $150 & up?

Kevin, The modem itself may be that price, but localy, you basically 'rent' the modem, which is included in your monthly fee. If you are looking into getting a cable modem, I would highly suggest you do two things, get a personal firewall and ensure that you disable Client for Microsoft Networks. |

Well, Ive had DSL for about a year now and I really like it. It makes the net so much more enjoyable. I got in during one of thier specials and I pay something like $32 a month for the connection and ISP through Verizon (formerly GTE). I just did the speed test and it came out at 533.3kbps. Definatley a lot better than than the old 56k.
Oh and Im not sure if it will be the same way where you live, but around here you shouldn't expect the DSL to work as soon as it gets hooked up. Usually takes a couple of days to a couple of weeks to get everything working right. Hopefully, they will get you fixed up the first time. Michael |

Roadrunner Cable Modem here, 784.6 on the first site and 583 on the second. I will never go back to dial up again. Dishnetwork now offers 2 way satellite internet access for those of you who cannot get cable or dsl. The only drawback is that it is still subject to climate, ie dense thunderstorms. Just a thought.

Cable or Dsl is definitly worth it. I prefer Dsl over cable due to the above mentioned shared connection of cable and the fact that I play a lot games online and cable has a lot more packet loss problems than dsl does.

I have this 1200 BPS acoustic coupler I bought back in 1983 that I use. Whats a DSL? I swear by this here Commodore 64, It sounds like it must be Military hardware. |

Well I just got rid of my cable modem since I became un-employed. I tell you one thing, I miss it. This dial up crap sucks. Takes me forever to connect during peak hours. Pics are a bitch to download. My bro sent me a vid clip of my nephews B-Day party and it took an hour to download. With DSL or Cable modem you would not need to worry about that crap. I need a job soon so I can afford my toys again. [:(]
When I was with @Home cable modem I downloaded the Phantom Menace preview clip(18megs) in 15mins. You're going to love DSL its just a tad bit faster on the download than Cable Modem. A lot faster on the upload side. |

Weird,
First site: 831 kbps Second site: 78 kbps I'm on a hybrid cable modem. Downstream Cable, upstream POTS. Another cool site (the one that started it all) is [url]www.speedguide.net[/url] if you go to [url]www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_links.shtml[/url] there is a list of sites that have speed testing links. IMHO, Cable modems give you more bang for your buck. Even though you are are on a "shared" network. With a DSL connection, after one or two hops, everyone is on a "shared" connection, i.e. the internet!!! I did some math some time ago when Cable and DSL were just coming out and using Advertised speed vs price I came up with these numbers... Speed Price/Kbps 256k DSL $0.25 512k DSL $0.24 786k DSL $0.30 1000k DSL $0.37 Cox@home $0.02 These numbers are really old now (and only for my area), but at the time when I did the research they were valid. I haven't priced and done the numbers lately. So take the info with a grain of salt. |

At home 51k checked at my sisters house 1.5M dowm and about 1M up.every time iv'e tested hers she has never had less than 1M down.My brother in Ohio has cable down and can only upload at 28k over a phone line because of the wires in his apartment complex.

Another problem with the two-way satellite access is latency. You can pretty much forget about online gaming with this service. Sure, you can download stuff fast, but that signal has to make the trip from your computer, to the satellite, to the base station, and THEN over the Internet. Things (like online FPS games) pretty much require low latency to be enjoyable. But if you don't do that kind of thing, it may be an option. -Gloftoe |

a cool program is neotrace www.neotrace.com/ will trace your connections and tell you if there are router problems I LOVE neotrace!!! Coolest progie out there for doing diagnostics for checking out sites. Found out the the FBI and several cybercrime groups use it alot to trace back crackers. I read somewhere that the creators of Neotrace give classes to Cyber Law Enforment groups on how to use their software. Love to get in there for the fun of it. |
