Was reading an article today by Clint Smith and he stated that the Carbine or Rifle is the best home defense gun. Personally we keep a handgun in a safe by the bed.
I know this has been covered before, and it always seems to be shotguns and pistols that people prefer for bedside guns. Was just curious since more instructors are leaning towards carbines or preaching the carbine lore, if more people are considering or actually using carbines. |

AK-74 clone with 30rnd mag, flashlight, and aimpoint leaning in the corner next to the bed
.357 revolver on the headboard |
1911 cocked and locked on night stand, AR15 w/ loaded mag and empty chamber leaning against said nightstand.
Edit: should have allowed multiple choices in the poll |
Mossy Oak skinning knife under the pillow, cheap katana by the headboard, and a crossbow pistol on top of the gun safe at the foot of my bed.

A great man once said..."A pistol is only good for fighting your way to a rifle" or something along those lines.

KEL TEC SUB RIFLE in 9mm with 33 rd glock mags tac light and forward grip. Ammo 124 grain + p.

I have been considering the merits of a carbine and I think I might try it one of these days and see how it works out. Maybe just add the carbine to the pistol. Kinda like that old arfcom saying "get both"

You left revolver off the list.
Mine are Glock 23 and S&W 60. My wife has a Colt Government .380 |
don't paint us no pictures!! |

Mossberg 590 w/#8 shot and slugs by the bed, and a .40 cal glock under the mattress, w/ two big dogs at the foot of the bed.

only if you home invader is not wearing body armor, and even than it's got it's cons.... |
+1 it does rotation w/ a USP45F. Usually another pistola stashed nearby. I'm shooting for points. Used to bring a carbine to bed but of lately, No. |
Carbine is good, but will go through the intruder, all of your walls & into the neigbor kid's room..
Shotty is good, but unwieldy in close quarters & easily taken away vs a pistol.. I say pistol, with a shotty backup. |
Glock 21 on the night stand with Bushie M4 propped near, 30 rnd mag with no round in the chamber
Well, I have three revovlers in .45 colt as well as a short levergun in the same caliber....
The poll woudl not let me chose more thna one so I chose pistol |
Two actually:

+1 Carbine is good, but will go through the intruder, all of your walls & into the neigbor kid's room.. And they are my damn walls, I'll shoot through them if I want to. Seriously, they ALL go through walls. So, what's your point? Not on subject, but some years ago my great-uncle (elderly, quite ill) shot an attacker, a large drunk who stated he was going to do great bodily harm. As the guy broke into his bedroom, my uncle drew his pistol from his nightstand and shot twice through the heart. From a lying position. Nice 2" group. |
A Mossy 500,an AK-47, a 45,a pit/boxer,and shepard/rotty
But we let the two cats handle the light work. |
Shotty with 00 buck. Yea yea, I know my carbine is better, but one shot with its muzzle break and I am deaf for life. Not worth it. Ill take my chances.
3" S&W Model 60 loaded with .38 +P 125 grain hollowpoints in a single quick-access safe.
I've got two grandchildren in the house all day. Prior to their arrival I kept my Mossberg 590 loaded and available. Now it's in the big safe. |
HK Mk 23 Socom with UTL on the nightstand, next to the alarm clock.
Also, my Bushmaster M4gery with loaded 30 rd mag is under my bed. |
Colt King Cobra .357
Just inside the closet door is a Mossberg 835 UltiMag loaded with Duplex No4xBB with the extra full turkey choke in it. |
Whatever you use better have a flashlight on it. I learned this the hardway, as some racoons were trying to get in my back door. Scared me something fierce, as I thought it was zombies in my living room.
I have a shotgun with whatever handgun I fell in love with that month as a backup. |
Mossy 500 w/00 buck under bed
Glock 27 w/ trijicon nites loaded w/ Hornady 180 grain JHP/XTP in night stand |
