...If you are opposed to the government", a close friend and self proclaimed conservative and registered Republican, asked me this yesterday July 4th as we walked the streets of Carmel, CA.

I told her the flag did not represent the government. It represented the country, and not just a mass of land but an idea. A concept unlike any other in the world. One of total personal freedom to live free. I told her I fly the flag all the time. To remind myself, and anyone who sees it, that the liberty and freedom we have was paid for by the blood of patriots who shared that ideal. That we cannot forget that and if we do not continue to fight for that freedom, we will lose it an ever growing and unresponsive government.

She thinks I am extreme.

It was then that I became aware, as I looked up and down San Antonio street (where the REALLY expensive houses are) that I could not see one single flag flying. I couldn't help think what a sad commentary that was.

It was good to come home to the mountain community I live in where virtually everyone flies the flag.

Why do you fly the flag?

Because I am an American!!! Shouldn't that be enough for these people. I love my country. I can't understand why it seems so hard for some to understand, i mean, everyone should fly the flag. To do otherwise is an insult to our nation and to our founding fathers. To many people just seem to think of America as the place they happen to live, no more no less. Those people don't have a clue, they just walk around blind.

I fly the flag to honor those who've come before and paved the road with their blood, sweat, and lives, so I have a home to fly it at and a country to fly it in.

ABC News Poll yesterday reported "only 20% of
Americans have an 'OLD GLORY'."
I will wager that the same percentages hold true
or less among AR15.COM members.

I don't have a flag because to me it represents the tyranny of the socialist govenment weve let ourselves turn into.  We pay more of our money in taxes today than the colonials did and I don't feel represented. (maybe I need to move to Ron Paul's district)  I personally have no love for our flag.

Now, maybe one of those thirteen star jobbies?

I have a flag hanging on my wall over my bed.  It reminds me when I wake up or go to sleep that people gave all to let me sleep in a warm comfortable bed, live in such a nice house, and live free.

Those folks in the expensive neighborhood probably can't fly the flag even if they wanted too, it may violate their deed restrictions.  Now, that's really sad.

ihave a few "old glories" but i also have the "strs and bars" handy too.
they both stand for the same thing "that the people are not to be held in contempt." tis a shame the stars and bars are so mis-understood.

Ratters, the flag you should be against is the flag that Looks like an American flag, but it's not in a 1:1.9 ratio, and has a gold fringe.  That's the flag of something other than the American Ideal.  Our American Flag still flies for the Ideal.

I fly mine every day.  I put it up @ 0800, and I take her down @ sunset.  Flying on the same pole directly underneath is the Gadsden flag.

Several of my neighbors brought out their flags on Independence Day, but they have since taken them down.  I am the only person on the street with a flag pole in the yard, those who do fly the flag have those tilted poles on their garage.

I am proud to fly my flag, I have on a few occasions flown it upside down.  When I do, one of my neighbors will call me or come over to tell me to fix it, then I get to tell them why it is upside down.

Frontsite- Good point.

redray- OK, because you are veteran that means you get to call me a dickhead?  Did I say you could not fly your flag?  Did I disparage any of the other posters for flying their flag?  I just explained why I chose not to fly one.  Who is being the dickhead?

I also fail to see the logic that I should be living somewhere else.  I bought my house, am a productive member of society.  Because I think the greatest threat to my freedom is my own government means I should move somewhere else? I like where I live and my friends in the community.  Why should I move because I don't like being told to pay half of what I make in taxes or told what firearms I can own?  So there aren't any better options out there, I'm just supposed love it or leave it?   What kind of reasoning is that?  I don't get it.
