...If you are opposed to the government", a close friend and self proclaimed conservative and registered Republican, asked me this yesterday July 4th as we walked the streets of Carmel, CA.
I told her the flag did not represent the government. It represented the country, and not just a mass of land but an idea. A concept unlike any other in the world. One of total personal freedom to live free. I told her I fly the flag all the time. To remind myself, and anyone who sees it, that the liberty and freedom we have was paid for by the blood of patriots who shared that ideal. That we cannot forget that and if we do not continue to fight for that freedom, we will lose it an ever growing and unresponsive government.
She thinks I am extreme.
It was then that I became aware, as I looked up and down San Antonio street (where the REALLY expensive houses are) that I could not see one single flag flying. I couldn't help think what a sad commentary that was.
It was good to come home to the mountain community I live in where virtually everyone flies the flag.
Why do you fly the flag?
