I can understand them not wanting people to use handheld phones in the car. takes time to look and dial the phone. Now as long as you can use voice recognition to dial and hands free to talk it should not be any different than talking to a passenger. But then agian some people have problems JUST driving.

Is it a problem dialing, driving with one hand??
Maybe the problem is people get engrossed in the conversation they are having and become less aware of what is going on around them, regardless of whether they are holding the phone or wearing a headset.

Does this mean I will no longer be able to drive with a milk shake in one hand, a burger in the other, and steer with my knees?

I see people doing a lot more dangerous stuff than talking on a cell phone while driving.

My experience, YMMV, has been that if 2 or more people are in a car talking the more that is going on outside the car the slower the conversation becomes, the less going on outside the more in depth the conversation becomes. With a phone the person on the other end has no idea about traffice etc.

I seem to remember most of these cries of alarm some 25 years ago during the sudden popularity of the CB radio.

Some points may indeed be valid. But it is more about people control again. Or so I believe.

Dammit.....I want to know
1) how many traffic accidents are called in by a cell-phone driver (CPD)?

2) how many drunk drivers are pulled off the road because of a CPD?

3) how many lives saved or criminals caught because of a call by a CPD witness?

4) how much liberty is there in being a damn liberal? All I hear them say or push through in "feel good" legislation is something else that I am not allowed to do "for the greater damn good".

If I almost get creamed in traffic by 3 or less cell phone users who can't drive and talk at the same time, I consider that a slow day. There have been days when I had to dodge 9 cell phone users just on my way to work.

Later this year I'm having a third round of back surgery to repair the damage caused last year by some moron who was too busy chitchatting on his cell phone to notice that [b]everyone[/b] on the freeway in front of him had stopped and instead plowed into several cars at 60+ MPH. I got off easy - the girl in the car behind me still isn't walking, and some members of the moron's family in his minivan died.

As far as I'm concerned the public has thoroughly demonstrated that they are incapable of operating an automobile and cell phone at the same time.

I say ban cell phones in cars!!

I agree with Steel Rat. Every day during my commute on the interstate, the slow-moving vehicle in the left lane is invariably operated by some a$$hole talking on the phone. These humanoids are a menace.

A study came out a few months ago. I don't remember the source. It basically stated that a person talking on a cell phone has the same accident rate as a drunk driver.

just like guns EDUCATION is the key. You cant keep people from doing something they want to do. Murder is against the law yet people do it!
