what should i buy and why?

I bought the 870 Combo set (28" Remchoke barrel, and 20" Improved cylinder with rifle sights) at Walmart for $330, 870s with one barrel are ~$245, depending on the barrel.  I thought the extra $85 for the 20" barrel was a good deal, especially considering i got rifle sights and improved cylinder for the price of an 18" cylinder bore.  Its a great success on the trap range with #8 game loads.

I bought a used Mossberg 500 about ten years ago, for $100.  It has the 20" smooth-bore Accu-choked barrel.  The only modification is I drilled and tapped it for a scope mount.  I have a Tasco ProPoint 3 on it.  I use this shotgun for deer hunting.  I have it sighted in at 50 yards.  At 100 yards it holds a 3 inch group, 2-3" below point of aim.  Not to bad for a smooth bore and $2 a box Remington slugs.

I just bought a used 28" barrel with Accu-chokes, for $50.00, used.

Around hunting season, I see Mossberg Combos (slug and bird barrels) advertised for $229.00.  My local gun shop will not stock new ones, because he can not compete with Walmart or Dicks on price.  He always has a few used ones in stock though.  

I never had any trouble with my 500.  The safety lever and trigger-guard are plastic, but mine have never broken.  It has done everything I expected it to.  I am not afraid to carry this shotgun through the thickest brush, snow or rain.  

I am not one to install the latest gadgets on my weapons, so the lack of accessories, doesn't bother me.  The only other modification that I plan for this gun, is to refinish the wood in a non-reflective finish.  I am also going to install some sort of  rough finish, like grip tape on the forearm / pump.  This is to aid in working the action, with gloves on.

If I was going to buy an other shotgun, prices being equal, I would go for the 870 next.  There is nothing wrong with the Mossberg, but I think the Remington is a little better.  I would still keep my Mossberg as my don't worry, take anywhere shotgun.

Well just lst week I picked up my new Mossberg M-590A1 with the ghost ring sights and speed stock.

I love it.

It is the military issue and was the only shotgun (from what they say) that made it through their torture tests.

And ya gotta admit.. with the baynet on the end of it makes it look dead sexy! :)

I bought the HK FP6, last Christmas. At first I thought it was an equal of the SG`s mentioned, but it is not the case, the tribore system clearly reduces felt recoil. I used identical loads in a 870 and moss. The rem had more kick than all.
What really impreesed me was the fp6 had damn near the same recoil no matter the loads. That is to say the 00 & 000 buck, slugs and bird shot all felt similar esp compared to the others. Plus the fp6 comes with a b1tchen case and fibercoating as well as a folding stock.
The off side is limited aftermarket parts. I cant think of anything I would want to hang off of it that already there. It`s a bit pricey but I`d buy another.

That 590A1 9-shot looks pretty nice. What's the deal with the "speed feed" stock and GRS vs. bead sights?

I have had 2 mossies and niether worked well in cold temps, Picked up a Win 1300 defender and it works great. Right now you can get the 1300 Camp Defender with 22" barrel ,rifle sights,choke tubes , synthetic with 8 round capacity with the ability to add mag extensions ( which isn't poss with the Moss 500-590) for $219 from DAVIDSON'S, $239 from CDNN.

I chose the Mossberg 500 over the 870 because I liked its ergonomics. The tang safety and slide release behind the trigger guard are much easier for me to operate than the 870 features. I have no experience with the 1300.

I own the moss 500 and would prefer the rem. just because there are more accs. availible such as the mag extension.Ionly paid 100 bucks for my 500 and it only had about 25 rounds fired through it.

I've got 2 Mossberg 500s, a 5-shot and an 8-shot. I've been extremely pleased with both of them, and I'm planning to buy another one soon for use as a dedicated "truck gun".

I'm a sucker for Ithaca 37's and for my "folder" I have a Mossberg 500. Having said that, From a practical standpoint I'd buy an 870 for hunting and an 870 for my home defense folder set up and be done with it. They are reliable, sturdy shotguns with a huge following and a multitude of aftermarket toys made just for them.

Last Kosovo rotation I saw an Army SF guy with a Mossberg 590 - just like the one I used to have. I've never liked the 590 though - mine was a POS and I hate the safety. Some 101st guys had older Remington 870's down there. I also saw a few older Winchester Shotguns - as in Vietnam era being used there. I would personally go with the Remington 870 - The US military has used it a lot and it is a favorite with some groups like the British SAS. I love the design of the 870 - try to get a Scattergun Technologies model ( or a Police/Tactical type model from Remington).

Love my 870 pumper.  Now lookin for an under the AR model.

I originally figured on buying an Express, but got more info and figured the Wingmaster was worth the few extra buck.
