Ok,  I consider myself to be a bona fide arms enthusiast,  but for the life of me,  I can't figure out what and AK-47 is and what an AK-74 is.

Isn't the AK-47 the standard Soviet (Russian) battle rifle chambered in in 5.56mm - the one that the Viet Cong used in 'nam?

And is the AK-74 the 7.62mm version ?

Ak-47 is the Russian infantry rifle.  It is caliber 7.62X39.  Issued in 1947 and used till about 1974 (go figure[:D])

In 1974 they issued the AK-74 in 5.45X39 as their answer to the M-16.  I'm sure people will post pics of each.

The AK-74 is distinguishable by it's orange or brown plastics mags, and the muzzle break on the real ones.

Sorry, I don't have any pics to post.

Here is my semi-auto version of an AK47 chambered in 7.62x39. Incidentally it is for sale in the exchange forum (couldn't resist the plug) :)

Basically,

The Ak-47 has the milled billet receiver in 7.62x39mm.
The AKM is the modified version that uses a stamped receiver, still 7.62x39mm.
The AK-74 is the 5.45x39 caliber version.

AK-74(SAR2) with original Romanian muzzle brake and front sight block.  Everything is there except the bayo lug(it's there but I shaved off the ears to make it legal, pissed me off to have to do that).  As far as I know there are no or very few, a handful really, real AK-74's in this country
