Deadly Rampage
Eight Children Dead After Stabbing Incident at a School

June 8 — A man brandishing a kitchen knife burst into an elementary school in Osaka, Japan, today and slashed 29 people, killing at least eight children.

News reports say that 37-year-old Mamoru Takuma allegedly climbed into the school through a veranda and began slashing children in the back of a classroom. He then rushed into the corridor and continued his frenzied attack before two teachers subdued him.
Officials say that he was in a highly unstable condition and his speech was slurred when they arrived at the scene, saying that he admitted to taking a large number of tranquilizers before the attack. He was arrested while hundreds of students evacuated to the schoolyard, and was taken to a police hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries.

The wounded children were rushed to the hospital. A total of 29 people were injured by the stabbing, some more seriously than others.

Suspect Had History of Mental Illness

Takuma's motive for the attack is still unclear, but Japanese law enforcement authorities said that he has a history of mental illness, and he had been hospitalized before for self-inflicted injuries. Media reports also say that he was formerly employed at a different elementary school in the city.

There has been several school stabbings reported in Japan over the past few years, but they were mainly isolated incidents confined mainly among delinquent students. Japan has a very low crime rate, and is considered generally a very safe country.

Most witnesses were shocked about the incident, and could not believe that this was happening in Japan. It's a scene that they've seen on the evening news relayed from the U.S. and something they never expected there.

Osaka is Japan's third largest city on the island's western coast. This attack is considered the country's most lethal mass killing since nerve gas attacks on Tokyo's subways six years ago

I think they should start waiting periods, background checks, restrictions on length (too short and long), go after the knife manufacturer.

This guy was on tranquilizers?  Good thing he wasn't hopped up.  When we have school knifings they don't end up as bad.  Any ideas why the difference?

We need PRACTICAL knife laws.  Every year 100s of thousands die or are maimed from knives.

Japan is experencing a rash of violent crimes, with the use of knives.
