They will be presented at Gunstock, likely during the Saturday evening dinner and prize drawing. This has been a long, drawn-out ordeal, but the results are worth the time and effort. I hope they are as pleased as I am. Hopefully arrangements have been made for pics of the knives, plaques, and Avila's during the presentation. Thanks again to all who participated.

WooHoo! And I'm gonna miss it.
Enjoy! Edited to add, thanks for putting the donors names on the plaque! That's really cool. |
Can't wait...I thought they already had 'em though...oh well, this is better I guess.
The original plan was to present them prior to last Christmas. Boy, was I in for a surprise. This stuff takes TIME! I just got the sheaths in my hands the week before last, so we barely made it in time for GS. I'm glad it's all done, and turned out so well. |
Seriously though, we will take some pictures and post them ASAP! |
OMG, they are fantastic. I have tears in my eyes, I feel honored to have been able to be a part of this!
I look forward to helping Ed drag a deer he has dressed out with his knife. Hmmmm. Beekeeper, it DOES come pre-sharpened, right?
Wow, after looking more closely at these knives, I'm almost tempted to retire my old faithful Buck folding hunter....beautiful work! |
They are sharp. My wife uses hers and it takes/holds an edge VERY well. I have gutted and skinned/quartered three deer without touching it up. It's good steel. They rust easy, so I pour boiling water over them to remove the fat from working on deer, then the heat dries them rapidly. After that, I put gun oil on them. |
WOW. Those are stunning. So, who is the lefty in the bunch?
Woody |
GoatBoy is the freak--big surprise, eh?? |
Actually,Edward is the lefty. I am extremely pleased with how everything looks. We shall always tell our children, grandchildren and their children for generations to come, the story of these knives -and the friends who gave them to us- as we get together for hunts that I hope become tradition. Most of all,I am AGAIN,impressed with the generosity and kindness of my AR15.com family. There are no words that would properly express our feelings. So for now, let a simple but heartfelt thank you, be representative of our deep appreciation. |

Who made em again? I like the pattern of the blade an think a nice wooden handled one would be THE SHIT for my skinning needs.
Just make sure that Goatboy is supervised when these are in use.

The maker is Chuck Hawes--Weldon, Illinois. He posts here occasionally as HawesForge. He is known internationally, and happens to live about 25 miles from me. I first met him at a local gun show. My wife was beginning to deer hunt, and he allowed us to watch him forge the steel for her knife. We now have a number of them. They are NOT showpieces (though he does make those too--do a Google search), he tempers them to a Rockwell of 59-61 on the leading edge, and a spring temper on the spine in order to make them almost unbreakable. I have seen a number of wooden handles he has done--the are beautiful too. IM me for his phone number if you wish. |
Will do. I want a utility knife not a purdy POS, sounds like he's the man. |

Hmmm--I checked the hand tracings before I posted and Juan sent a photocopy of his left hand, and Edward his right. It won't matter, as they are almost identical in size. Edward ends up with the one with the reddish cast in the handle--my favorite, as it's rare. |
WOW!!!
Those are very nice. Well worth the time, effort and wait. Very nice indeed. Thanks for putting this together Beekeeper. |
Its not the gift its the thought that counts right ?
But it helps when the gift is a bitching set of knives. The cross section of the handle is sweet. EDsr and family use in good health. |
Thank for the hard work on this project TBK1.
The results are OUTSTANDING!!! |
After seeing the final results I must say I am so happy to have been a part of this humbling yet exquisite demomstration of this forum's deep appreciation of the AVILA family. God bless you all.
Man they really turned out great!!!! Thanks TBK1 for putting this together - Great Job!!!...
I just wish I could be there for the presentation... Don't forget to take pics!!!!! And Thank You to the Avila family for all you have done for the firearms community and for our brave soldiers, and Thank You for this board! These knives are but a small token of our gratitude!!! |
Those are unbelievable TBK1. You did a fantastic job organizing this and seeing it through.
Very very glad to be a small part of it! |
Thanks TBK1 for all your hard work (and patience) in seeing this through.
They are truly beautiful, I'm sure the Avilas will be pleased with them. |
Thanks--we'll know tonight. I wish my wife and I could have made Gunstock. |
Nice Knives! Why do they each say "One Of Four"? I would think 1 of 4, 2 of 4, 3 of 4, and 4 of 4. Just me! |
Those are beautiful knives. How the hell did I miss out on participating in that?
Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
They are truly beautiful, and I think the Avilas were very touched by the presentation. Hopefully someone got some good pictures of it. I can't think of more deserving folks to get those knives. Ed Sr. told me that he plans on using his knife when he hunts; he wants it passed down to his grandchildren and wants them to see that the knife was carried and used and loved. No "safe queens" for him!
I forgot to mention, and I'm sure it's been noticed by now, but the plaque for Ed Sr. was made a bit different than the others. He mentioned at Bulletfest (I think that's where it was) having his sit in his office--so it was made to sit. It can be converted to hang by removing the felt and exposing the screws for the extra piece ("foot"). The others have small children, so we figured it would be best to have them hanging.
I know Cockedandlocked got pics....he was blocking me from seeing the presentation because he was taking pics. If I was 100 pounds heavier and a foot taller I would have tapped him on the shoulder and told him to move. |

Thanks again to everyone who made this possible. God bless the Avila's.
those are beautiful. I wish i was there to see the presentation

I have caught up a bit since coming back,so I will try to thank you all properly.
The problem is, that there is no way to thank all of you who contributed to make this possible. From those who gave cash to pay for them,to Mr Hawes, the custom sheath maker,tbk1's dad for the beautiful plaque with all your names and to Mrs and tbk1 for all the coordinating and organizing on this honor you have bestowed upon us! While my sons might venerate their knives in their offices/dens,I intend to put mine to good use -as encouraged by tbk1 and Mr Hawes - as soon as next weekend, when i go bowhunting for whitetails! Edward will be given his this weekend. He has been working for the last 3 days and nights with his team finishing a project at work and -I am told-went home tonight ............for the first time since Saturday! JLA will be receiving his when I visit Phoenix for the birth of his 2nd son (my fourth grandchild) in 3 weeks. A funny note about the knives -and this will explain some "irregularities" noted by tbk1- is that Edward (L-handed) and Juan (R-handed) traced their dominant hands at work..........and then somehow got them mixed up, and put their name on the other's tracing. And they say I don't pay attention!that is why Juan appears to be the lefty and Edward the r-handed ones..........they screwed up the names! Anyway,THANK YOU ALL for such a beautiful gift that I will treassure for as long as I live, and that will be passed on to my grandchildren! |
Here's to a long life for you--and a strong influence on your grandchildren. The best to you and yours, my friend. I hope you find it acceptable. Of course, it is to your specifications, so you would have no one to blame but yourself. heh |
I do not think you can get a good idea of these knives until you handle them! They are gorgeous......as is the sheath! No,thank you,my friend! |

I just received my knife Friday night, when Ed Sr arrived here in Phoenix; and I just want to say a big THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you to tbk1 and everyone that made this possible... the knife is simply AMAZING and the plaque is a great way to display such a special piece. It immediately went up in my den, where it will be proudly displayed! Again, thank you all so much!!! |
I'm glad you're pleased. Best wishes with the new little Avila. |
