British semi-spoof/semi-remake of the typical NOTD/DOTD zombie flicks - and very well done at that.
Excellent build up throughout the first half to the actual zombiefest grand finale. Very funny and often very dry humor (my favorite kind). Love the scenes when he's walking around his neighborhood utterly oblivious to the zombies all around him - VERY well done and humorous! The comical nonchalantness of how Shaun and his roomate dispatch their first two zombies in their backyard, Shaun's "plans" for getting rid of his step-dad and their ingenious way of getting through the mass of zombies surrounding the local pub (which they decide would be the best place to hide) are just a few of the MANY smart&funny scenes loaded into this mucho funno flick.
Great balance between an actual STORYLINE going on in the midst of "Z-week", character development, the humorous mocking of the zombies throughout the movie and the gratuitous blood-spurting, neck-chomping, intestines-ripping gore & death expected of any real zombie flick.
BTW... The last zombie flick I saw was "28 Days Later" and that was a British flick too. Luckily "Shaun Of The Dead" didn't start out with a "full monty" shot like 28DL did - although half-way through (when his roomate steps out of the shower) they COULD have thrown in the obligitory British-male-penis or ass shot that seems to be always placed in EVERY frickin British movie ever made.
In the tradition of Joe-Bob Briggs: Two impaled zombies, one car crash, 23 zombies beaten about the head, one winchester lever-action rifle, zero people skilled enough to use said winchester rifle effectively,
three zombie head shots, three pints of guiness, two buckets of blood, one ratfink, one naked roomate (male), zero naked women, cricket-bat-Fu, Pool-Cue-Fu.
Three & half stars. The_Macallan says check it out.
