...written by John Graves.  It's the recounting of a man's journey down the Brazos River in central Texas from the dam at Possum Kingdom(!) Lake to Lake Whitney.

The year was 1958, the Brazos was in the process of being 'dammed up' and Graves, who had played on the river as a youth, wanted to paddle down it one last time, while it still flowed as it had from time immemorial.

As he canoes down the river with his faithful dog, he tells of old Texas Tales that occurred at that particular spot on the river or the next, or up that tributary, or just events from his youth.

Excellent reading on Texas.  Graves was a Marine in WWII, lost an eye on Saipan, lived the expatriates' life in Spain for a decade or so, and then returned to Texas to begin writing in his old stomping grounds in Somerville Co.

If you're new to Texas, this book will bring you up to speed pretty quickly on our history.
