Check the lint trap and clean it.  How old is it?  It may just be getting worn out.

I aways clean the lint catch before drying, it promotes airflow and speeds up drying.

I can't imagine you not doing the same, so check the vent, maybe it's clogged.

After checking the lint trap, check the exhaust hose (whatever it's called).  Sounds like an air flow problem

Exhaust hose clear and check. Even went outside to check that vent and its clear.
For those it's a Maytag bought in 92-93.

maybe the heating element isn't getting as hot as you think it is. Call the Maytag repairman, I believe he's got a lot of time on his hands anyway.

GAS

Did you clean the burners? You may be able to vacuum them off. It still sounds like an airflow problem. Maybe after you close the door it doesn't burn good then. The Flame should be nice and blue...not yellow or orange.
Let me know if this helps.

MMK,
If he has flames inside it better be gas![:D]
If not he will surely be needing another one.

Baloo--- Maytags should last a lot more than 9 or 10 years. I got a Kenmore in 86' and its still working. All i've done is replace those little roller wheels inside so it wouldn't "clunk" anymore. Has it been "eating" socks?

OOPS thats what i get for just scanning the post.i had one that was doing the same thing,i can't remember now exactly what was wrong with it,but i do remember it was going to cost more to fix it than to replace it.mmk

NO WAY!!!! I have a Kenmore 86, and I had to also replace a roller years ago.  Now it takes longer to dry.  New was about 50-60 minutes, now  70-75 the first time and a 10min touchup.

Mine will also shut off the gas at times, which is part of the longer drying time.  It happens randomly, and then has to be re-started.  Maybe that's the problem you're experencing?

Baloo, you may have a limit switch that is defective. In the housing where the flame shoots into there is a high limit switch that may be shutting off the burner as the chamber gets hot. I would say check and see if the burner stays on the whole time, if not it's more than likely the problem.
I think I read that you have eliminated restriched air fow int the vent as well as the lint trap.

Have you checked to see if the fan is blowing heated air into the dryer chamber?  Fan motors have thermal overtemperature safety switches.  If the fan rotor is not spinning at all, the motor draws as much current as it can, then the safety switch cuts it off as it reaches the hot temperature.

Nuckles has the right idea--- "solar" clothes dryer. I got one, only fails on rainy days.

BALOO,

I know what your problem is. I have the same exact problem and I even posted what I did here on the boards.

Okay move the dryer forward from the wall and inspect the flexible plastic exhaust tube. You will notice that it is filled up with water.

This happens when the exhaust is kinda clogged up. The condensation will accumulate instead of being "blown out" of the exhaust.

You can remedy the problem by simply taking off the flexible plastic tube and then cleaning the tube, the exhaust of your dryer and the hole in the wall where the exhaust attaches to. Make sure that the entire exhaust system is cleaned.

While you are at it, clean the lint and other debris under the dryer.

This should take care of the problem as it did mine.

email me if you need more instruction.
