I was wondering if you guys have built up collections of many of the "assault rifles"?

What are the must haves?

Obviously:
AR15
AK47?
M1A1?
SKS?

Boy, an M1A1 an assault rifle? Talk about stretching the definition! I'd love to have an assault rifle like that. Let's see, 120mm smooth bore, .50 cal machine gun, couple of 7.62x51 machine guns, a couple of M4 Carbines, some external grenade launchers.... [:)]

Seriously, though, I think the "must have" assault rifles would be:

1) AR15
2) AK47 or AK74
3) M1A or FAL

That would pretty much cover all the bases. I'm sure others will come up with some more exotic and expensive candidates, but those are the most prolific and easiest to support/find parts/mags/and ammo for in the United States.

None of my rifles have full auto fire so I don't own any "assualt rifles" Is that like the tech-9 being described as an high powered military assualt pistol in a newspaper article?

The only Assult rifle I own is a M16. I have other AR15's but by definition they are not assult weapons (no fully automatic fire)

I have always thought of full auto as "machine guns" and the military style semiautos as "assault weapons" since they aren't machine guns or hunting rifles.

Why not just call them semi-auto rifles? Most of us should be able to figure out the context of the question. I agree with MOD and 7, don't add fuel to their fire.

That is actually a great name that fits them well.

They aren't hunting rifles, and they are far more then just semiautos, and they aren't only for cops and the military.

well,actually my AR's are hunting rifles,never seen a better varmit riifle chambered for .223.And I have seen pictures of people hunting deer with M1A's and AR-10's.If you want to stretch your imangination even AK's were/are used in africa to "hunt" elephant,however sick and unethical{not to mention illegal}it is.

Until my goverment "allows" me to own a true
M-4,M-16,AK-47,AR-70,M-70 Valmet,Galil,ect.......I will not own any "assualt weapons",nor have my semi-auto hunting rifles{functionally the same as a semi-auto turkey shotgun}or SUR's clasified as "assualt rifles".

Actually, the "assault rifle" is defined as a full auto, small/short round AKA the 5.56mm (.223)/Russian 7.62x39. The M14/FAL etc. which fires a full power round (.308) is defined as a "battle rifle".

Lets not forget that Military .308 rifles are considered "Battle Rifles".

"Assualt rilfes" by definiton are capable of Select fire and fire an intermediate cartridge between a pistol and full size rifle.

After all this I think the must have semi-atuos are easily the AR-15, AK47, and a .308 (My pick would be the FAL followed closely by the M1A1)

Here in Mass it is illegal to hunt with a rifle other then a .22. Not to mention it illegal to hunt with any firearm capable of excepting more then 5 rounds.

I won't be doing any AR hunting anytime soon.

You have to use a .22 rimfire on deer???
technically{sp} isn't .223 considered a .22 caliber round{it is when buying cleaning brushs and stuff},you sure you can't legally use at least a shotgun on deer?

Everybody forgets the carbine, it can hold it's own out to 150 meters with soft or hollow points. The carbine also has cheap mags and parts and is more “PC” looking than an AR. The .308 was actually supposed to be an intermediate cartridge but turned out to have the same velocity in a shorter case of the round it was supposed to replace the "ought six".

I agree with MOD+7.These are semiauto rifles,not select fire.The "anti" nuts have really made the assualt rifle label stick.Alot of gun owners also fall for the B.S.[v]

One word, Steyr AUG
Every home needs a Steyr AUG. There rather pricey but a USR with some high-caps is fairly sweet too. I shot one the other day and fell in love with it. The ergonomics are great, it is just as acurate as my bushy AR 20", and much lighter than my Bushmaster M-17s. I think that if it wouldn't have been for the 89' import ban and the dumb @$$ clinton "clarifications" either the AUG, or the USR would be some of the most popular rifles in the US imo

Depending on your state law you can hunt with a ar-15. My state's law says, ".22-cal. or larger centerfires with expanding bullets" for deer, bear, and hog. I think sport utility rifle is a great term but anything except assualt rifle.

And who gives a damn what you call them. I think everyone uses them differently. My ARs are not hunting rifles. So what the hell are they? Target rifles? I like to think of them as Constitutional Insurance Policies.

It makes a lot of difference in the case of calling it an "assualt rifle" b/c when you use the term to describe it, it means you accept the anti's definiton and you let them frame the debate with their language. An ar-15 is a hunting rifle and a target rifle, it is both of those and more.

Those ar15's are nothing more than varment rifles 223Cal put a scope on them and that's what they are! the nitty gritty of it all is the evil looks they obtained. and current military issue weapon makes them evil. these rifle's are used in comp all over the country/world. the AK47 is more of an assult rifle due to its in between cartridge and not very accrurate nature. like most SMG's they are used for military and defence or down right killing purpose's. Don't flame me for this statement; i own two AK47's and i won't give them up eather. i really classify the AR15 in a different catagory due to it can run with a bolt action any day of the week. the M1A is NOT an assult rifle; its a Battle rifle. i don't see how they can apply the FN FAL eather its a Battle rifle using a full length rifle cartridge.

FAL or FNC if you won't consider a "battle rifle"
AK74 not 47, the 47 is OK but the 74 is better.
SteyrAUG of course
ARs until you can no longer tell them apart.
SKS, what are you sick?

Must haves? Let's see, how about five or six of everything plus at least 100,000 rounds of ammunition for each caliber and plenty of spare parts?

By my calculations, this would equate to 334 different rifles and over 5.7 million rounds of ammunition.
