From the pic and what you describe it is a Pin Fire revolver. The round that it shot had a pin protruding from the side of the cartridge next to the rim and the hammer struck this pin whitch in turn struck a priming compound in the cartridge to fire it. These were one of the earliest self contained cartridges.
