Saw several Marines from Quantico this pm at the Hburg Sportsman's Show. I got to fondle the pictured M4 and A3 rifle. That bolt rifle is heavy! Had an interesting talk with a Scout-Sniper Inst. that was there. He had his ghillie and other gear with him. Quite informative. Now I can see why a lot of you guys like your M4gery's.

There was a good article in the February '01 issue of American Rifleman concerning the M40.  They also have a little blurb about the A3 prototype that  you have pictured.

The color did match. The direct flash from my digicam washed out part of the receiver. Sure wish I had my studio lighting there.

I saw the flash wash-out on the one picture, but the one that caught my eye was the close-up of the hand guards. In that pic. it sure looks like a color mismatch. Not that it truly matters, ya' know.

Studio lighting would have made some awesome pictures.

Bushmaster would be the BMW and colt is the YUGO[puke].

That looks like a U.S. Optics scope on the M40A3. Nice!!!

I'd have to say that the lower is an older one as the color is faded as you can see the anodizing is starting to wear off in the 4th photo. FN of America has the new AR contract not Colt or Bush.

Mister Hemi, how correct, Mopars rule, chebbys drool. I have an early ser#111 A-2 Govt. carbine and it has been fantastic. can't knowledgeably comment on later Colt though, The real Big Block Mopar of my collection is my Armscorp M-14,kinda like my low 12 sec street Challenger

Guns... is right. Performance is more important than looks. I made the comment with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. I should have made a note not so as not to rile anybody.

Exactly like my M-4 except mines semiauto only and has a vortex - also no reflex sight. Love the Knights rail system. Not "new" technology really - everyone and their mother had one down in Kosovo. The current contract for M-4's is by Colt - but that is largely because Colt Firearms spends most of its time on its knees - Bushmaster on the other hand doesn't compromise gun rights. Colt gladly will go out of its way to impress the pretty boys at the Pentagon - those great chairborne warriors (smirk)

I gotta say first that these guys were very professional! Helpful, very willing to explain their weapons and some of what they are doing. The wife and I went downstairs and saw the Army guys dressed in their black, white and gold running outfits. They really contrasted vs the Marines. Sorry to any Army guys out there. Just going by what we saw.

It is hard for me to say this but... You were right. The color seemed to be more of a mismatch on camera than in real-life. Probably a result of T&E rather than related to actual production quality. I will mention that maintenance had to mop my drool off the floor after we left. I was a bit overwhelmed to be fondling some of the Corps new toys.

The rifle is a Colt.

I checked out the ACOG on the M4, very nice!
I am hoping to correspond with some of these guys via the net. Who knows, maybe I will get invited for a tour. Maybe not.
Either ways, outside of being technical, the bolt rifle is bloomin heavy, and that M4 is "sweet". Convinced me to look at a flattop shorty upper for my Bushie.

Dying to know how you get a bore guide into the receiver and a rod down the bore with that built up cheek piece.

da-da-damn, Skipper........would have seemed more than odd to see anything but THE Unertyl on a 40A1 to me.  When I taught at S/S School, 2nd MarDiv in '85-'86, it was the only scope known to gaff-off "clicks of x/xMOA".  You dialed in the distance(1-10 = 100yds-1000yds), so 730yrd was "7" with 1/3 increment of spacing toward "8".  The rifle was sighted in at 300yrds and zeroed on "3" for elevation along with windage being zeroed. This was with M118 flying at 2550fps....reducing a target in the chest past 400yds and the 173gr round came out their hinnie.  I am an old fart at 43, so I guess that the Unertyl on the 40A3 has new glass and internals technology and calibration for the faster round being used.

That's not an USO optics,it's an Unertl 10X USMC mil-dot with a Simrad NV250 mount.

Found this thread again while doing a search. Thought it had been long buried in the archives and saw it resurrected in May. After reading some of my posts, what a dork. I got alot to learn.

I don't recall what unit they were with and have not heard anything via email from the 2 Marines I talked with. The Marine that belonged to the bolt rifle stated he was a SS instructor at Quantico and thats all I remember. I was on sensory overload at the time cause of the guns.[:P]

fwiw, i bid on gov't contracts.

two weeks ago, i rec'd a bid package (along with several hundred other items to bid on...kind of a "package" deal) for a qty. of 6,182 ma's to supplied to the usmc. the bid was only open to colt. no other manufacturer was permitted to bid on this item...i.e. single source contracting.

i would therefore assume, that colt, and not fn have the current build rights/contract with at least the usmc.

evidently, contracts are still being issued for the m24 sniping rifle. i don't have a copy of the colt m4 bid in front of me, right now...but i did manage to pull this of my post at assaultweb.
