Just curious.
Seem to remember is showing up an AR15.com around late 1999.
Didn’t someone one the board dream that up?
Or did it come from somewhere else?

The term has become very popular.

Anyone?

Could have been Gore, we know at least its not from George Dubbya.

If it was, it'd be called "M4geriosously" or some other word that he makes up all the time.

It has been floating about the ar15 email list for 3-4 years now. It started over there. I am sending this link to the group so they can help.

Don't know for sure of the origin, but M4gery gets thrown around WAY too much. People have begun to say or post, "I have an M4gery" When in fact it is a post ban, full stocked, 16" barrel with no bayo lug, an AK brake, an A2 upper receiver and plain jane factory non-M4 handguards. People need to start saying "CAR15" again or "postban carbine".

Just my $.02

In my joy at having the these forums back up, I completely forgot the mailing list. Is it back up again? If so, can someone direct me to a link to sign back on? Thanks.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that the original M4s DID have an A2 upper reciever. The flat top came later. Otherwise, I agree with you.

The new group is on yahoo groups. They bought out egroups. the email address is [email protected]. If you send an email there you will probably get a reply explaining why you couldn't post and how to sign up so that you can post.

Boomer, good point. Yeah, I believe when the military first wanted to design an issuable M16 carbine, they basically put a Car stock and a shorter barrel on a standard M16A2. Military said it wanted use of the bayonet, so they used a 14.5" barrel. They said it'd be cool to mount an M203, so came the notched barrel. They didn't like the civvie handguards so made the M4 type.

I'm not for sure when exactly the A2 got replaced with a flattop, before or after the actual adoption of the "M4". All I know is that the current military M4 does utilize a flattop. There are M4 variants, so that might be what we are discussing.

I wish I could say for sure right now but I am out of town right now and can't look at the TM, but the M4 variants are listed in the 23&P. It should say which if any is an A2 and which is a flattop. I am thinking all M4's are flattops and the variants only deal with select fire capabilities, but I've been wrong before.

Someone post if they have the TM, otherwise I will post Tuesday when I'm back home and can check.

I'm not convinced that is the correct term yet anyway.

I like:
"Frankengun"
"M4 Clone"
"M-Forgery"

BTW: Real M4's are only made by Colt. If its not a Colt with a 14.5" Brl and Safe-Semi-Burst, its not an M4.

Law, then in your opinion the BM made M4s supplied to the U.S Army aren´t M4s, come on. My BM M4A3 is EXACTLY like the issue M4A1, only it has the "skinny" front handguard and is semi.
I too hate to see the "M4" shown, but i realise that in the U.S it is not so easy or cheap to own one as here.

Well, here is what I consider to be my M4gery. All Colt parts except for the Vortex flash hider.

And here is my post ban carbine, an MT6731 with, interestingly enough, an M4 stamped upper.

Oh, PLEASE!! What a crock of bull crap. That's like saying "just because it's not an Armalite it's not a real AR-15". As was said Bushmaster has the gov't contract for M4's. You mean to say that they are not M4's? One of the M16A2's I was assigned was an FN. You mean it wasn't really an M16A2?

Colt has done so much crap to the rifle to make it non-standard from the military, I don't know how you could even think to consider non-military Colts M4's.

You mean this isn't an M4? It's got several colt parts. Does a certain number of Colt parts count to qualify it as an M4 like in the import ban? The name might be different on the lower receiver, but everything else is exactly as the military uses it except for the Phantom and being semi.

Between the Colt and the Bushmaster parts, the stripped Olympic lower and the Phantom are the only two parts NOT used by the government.

Correct, plus it's a matter of much debate whether Bushmaster EVER supplied any rifles to the US military on more than a T&E bases. The coonfiguration of those T&E rifles in unknowm. But they clearly were not M4's since colt owns the rights to that weapon and many of the propriety parts.

Nobody does. An M4 has a 14.5" Brl, an A2 flash suppressor, Double lined handguards, feed ramps, & is safe-semi-burst. Only Colt makes them.

Correct. The rifle shown is a Semi only parts gun ("Frankengun") with a few M4 type parts.

I believe Al Gore did right after he invented the internet, and right before he lost the election and became a fat slob.  Has anybody seen him lately?  He is starting to look just like Clinton.
