My opinion:

Slipknot's "Wait and Bleed".     Don't knock it, till you listen to it.

Can get it off of Napster till. Even better when you know the lyrics. (http://lyrics.com)

It's an extreamly poetic song.

Even though it was not written as a song  Amazing Grace is the greatest song of all time as long as you believe in G-d that is. It just does something to you every time you hear it at least it does to me.

I'll agree with you there, Sniper; I have the scottish backpipe version of Amazing Grace (similar to the one in "Braveheart", and what is played at the funerals of LEO's).  Now THAT Sh*t gives me chillbumps everytime I hear it.

STEVE EARLE

I have all his CDs and met him at a theatre in Fargo, ND. I love his music but don't agree with many of his views. Had to listen to him preach his opinions against capital punishment. He's also an active environmentalist(anti-mining and exploration).

My favorite of his is "The Rain Came Down". A song in support of the farmers loosing their land at sheriffs auctions. FARM AID

*&^$#@!

You mean I have to give up Steve Earle AND U2?!

Come to think of it Bruce Springstein let fly with some pretty stupid rhetoric also.

(sigh) As you grow older you start losing idols big time.  Thanks for jogging my memory by the way.

My personnal theme song has always been "FREEBIRD" by Lynnard Skynanrd.

But I have to agree that "AMAZING GRACE" is probably the best.

I too like Tool. I thought that song Anema was how they felt about society in general, it's actually about Kalifornia(sums that state up real well), still cracks me up when I hear it(in a black humor sort of way). I still like to apply the theme to today's society, can't help it because that's the way I feel about the modern world sometimes.

Got to many favorites to list, just about anything from:

Tool
Rob Zombie
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Beatles
ACDC
Judas Priest
Van Halen
Jimi Hendrix

And of course that oldy: "The National Anthem"

'The Star Spangled Banner' was the 'best' song ever written, IMHO, considering the circumstances facing the composer.

'Amazing Grace' was the 'best' song ever written, IMHO, considering its effect on the listener.

The rest is just background noise.[:D]

Of course Aenema my Tool has to be up there, but I can believe nobody has mentioned Metallica yet.  They has some of the best lyrics on Master of Puppets and And Justice for all.

Disposable heros -
Life planned out before my birth, nothing could I say
had no chance to see myself, molded day by day
Looking back I realize, nothing have I done
left to die with only friend
Alone I clench my gun

That has to be my favorite verse on all of their songs, but there wrote a lot of songs against goverment control, especially on Master.

Out-damned-standing, Brother! Ahem...

“From the Halls of Montezuma
to the shores of Tripoli;
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

“Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
from dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun;
In the snows of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job-
The UNITED STATES MARINES.

“Here’s health to you and to our Corps
which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
And never lost our nerve;
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By UNITED STATES MARINES!”

Also, Garryowen, fantastic list there partner. Any list that has Hank and Ministry on it is all right with me. Kinda looks like my CD rack.

I see many great songs here, but with the exception of the few patriotic ones I doubt any of them could come close to being the "greatest song ever written".

Captain oblivious, no one else has bit on it so I will comment on Wait and Bleed.  I pretty much don't like slipknot or what they stand for, when I saw them live and they announced to the crowd that Surfacing was "your new national anthem" it pretty much pissed me off for good.  Especially since Surfacing is just them chanting the f-word.  Wait and Bleed is the only Slipknot song I give into liking because it is so damn good but to call it the best ever?

I personally think My Way is a song that any self respecting man should hold dear.

Elvis singing his American Trilogy is prolly the most beautiful patriotic composition I have ever heard, while the Star Spangled Banner could be sung completely off key and still be great.

Viva Las Vegas by Dead Kennedys

Come to think of it, most DK

Anything off Racer-X or The Hammer Party by Big Black

Anything by The DWARVES

Johnny Cash-- Mean Eyed Cat

But the good thing is, as much horrible crap as there is out there, there is still a good amount of excellent music with a hard, emotional core.
