The latest:
Snohomish County officials have confirmed they've recovered 16 bodies and located 8 more.
Snohomish County Fire District 21 Chief Travis Hots said searchers found no survivors during Tuesday’s search.
Snohomish County officials say they do not need any more volunteers. However, people can call 425-388-5088 or email [email protected] to report someone missing or someone safe.
DARRINGTON, Wash. — Snohomish County Emergency Management Director John Pennington has confirmed 16 victims in Saturday's landslide and eight more bodies have been located. Searchers found no living survivors Tuesday.
The news comes three days after the massive landslide destroyed the rural area in Snohohomish County.
Scores more people were reported missing, but Pennington would not estimate how many bodies were still buried in the tons of mud and crumpled homes in Oso, about 55 miles northeast of Seattle.
Pennington acknowledged that the chances of finding survivors was small, but said the effort remained a rescue and recovery operation.
"I've said it before-- I believe in miracles," he said. "I believe that people can survive these events."
“We are going to do everything that we can, with our capabilities, to recover every single person. That’s no guarantee that we’re going to get everybody, but we are going to do our very best to get everybody out of there,” said District 21 Fire Chief Travis Hots.
The search for survivors in the debris field is dangerous, and officials emphasized Tuesday no more volunteers were needed. A volunteer rescue worker was injured when a small piece of debris was thrown up in helicopter wash and struck the man in the head. The worker was taken to the hospital with what were described as minor injuries.

Mud makes an unsteady dam.  You are looking for an epic proportion fail if they don't release the pressure behind it soon.

Solution:  JDAM practice along the river bed.

Last I hear the EBS was advising everyone along the Stillaguamish river from milepost 41 to Arlington to evacuate, apparently the landslide cause a damn with the river backing up behind it.

I'm above the floodplain, but the family farm is directly in it.  Not too worried yet, we are about 25 miles down stream

I guess I'm surprised it wasn't on their broadcast. I don't do FB, so anything on there is unknown to me.

Just heard a news briefing, people were trapped last night and they could not get to them, they are trying now that it is daylight.

They described the mud as quicksand and must use helicopters to get to them, if they are still alive. and if they can find them.

It will be far less.

Some of that count is calls from people who saw someone with a vague description, probably the same person named in several other reports.

Still will be a shocking large number by the time its all over..

108 is high from the counts I heard... Thought it was 28... Well shit.

KOMO Radio had a dude on trying to say its due to Climate Change and Global Warming.

I knew that was coming...Climate change causes mudslides, earthquakes,
tornado's, rain, snow, droughts, above normal temps, and below normal
temps.
Even heard climate change may be to blame for that missing airliner (I shit you not).
In the 70's if we didn't heed the "experts" warnings we were going into
an ice age...in the 80's it was a hole in the ozone layer that was going
to kill us all if we didn't change our ways. Now of course its this BS.
Seems every tragedy has to be used to bolster the climate change
religion.

As a SAR volunteer out here, that is my worst nightmare. We had a pretty good mudslide a few years ago - had a huge fire, burned up most the mountainside, then monsoon season hit. Went right through a neighborhood - we found huge propane tanks thrown through living rooms and such. Amazingly, not one injury and everyone was accounted for within a couple hours.

It was the kind of callout that made us all pucker up as we were loading the vehicles to get out there.

Wow.

Just seeing what is on the national news about this, it sounded like a tragic, but relatively minor event.

Now having seen it, I really, really hope that the number of missing is way too high and that everybody gets accounted for, safe and sound.

and there was a previous landslide at the exact location in 2006, just not as large as this past landslide
