Market is on sale right now. Problem is, it could be a lot MORE "On Sale" in the coming months. Right now is not the time for a "Year or so" horizon, IMO. Unless you're shorting some stocks that have gotten a little too sweet lately.

People more knowledgeable than I should be along shortly. Consider this a bump.

I'm no expert, but I think the market is way to volatile right now for an amateur to be messing with such a short term investment.  You could lose pretty much all of that money way to easily.

Best advice.  Rather than risking it on a low return, get a guaranteed return in the form of no/reduced interest payments.

The original 5K will be used at the end of next year towards a down payment on a house. Looking to just add a little more to it. Its better than it just sitting in my savings account waiting to be used. I have about 25k so far saved up for a down payment just sitting in a savings acct.

This.

If you have some balls of steel, you could use that money to day trade with and probably double it in less than a month. On the other hand, you could lose it all in a split second. Most firms have a minimum trade of $10k and I think they also limit day traders.

Not that I'm a pro or anything, my advice would be just put the $5k in a money market account and leave it alone.

Find the highest percentage CD for one year locally. You may also think about doing two 6 month CD's as the return may be higher in the end.

There are a few banks doing promotions for CD's at over 2 percent for a year. Navy Fed is doing an easystart at 2 something for maximum three grand. 1 year CD. I took advantage of it. See if your local banks offer something similar. For a one year horizon and knowing you will NEED the money then... CD. Absolutely.

IMHO..............pay off debt.

If you're INVESTING..............wait for AFTER the Santa Clause Rally and AFTER the January effect.

If you're a TRADER............you're on your own.

Go with a CD.  That isn't money you want to fuck with.

Short term investments should only be done with money you are willing to lose 100% of.  Or if you're crazy and love to gamble.  I was crazy and took some wild chances with day trading.. I've had 80% returns in 3 hours, and 100% losses in the same time frame.

Does the foreigner in  chief know about this money?

He is an expert on re-distribution.

Personally I would hide it for just one year.

I would check the EE for good deals on used guns.

In about 11 months I would THEN decide I didn't need them any more and sell them, one by one, for a modest profit.

By doing nothing - just hold on to it. Investments are a professionals game, and based on your question you are not a professional. The only way to win is not too play.

One could acquire quite a few uppers for later sale. Be sure to report the income - those welfare bitches aren't going to feed themselves.

Buy five grand worth of guns and a year from now, sell them here on Arfcom

A year from now, the election will be decided and the market for guns may be very solid.
