I saw an AR lower in a thread somewhere that took AK74 mags, does anybody know what manufacturers make these? On the same note, what other platforms utilize AK mags? The only ones I can think of are the Sig 556R, PTR-32, the aforementioned AR and the AIA Enfield clones.

What's wrong with a regular AK74?

That would be dumb. The mag system on AKs is their biggest deficiency and the greatest advantage of ARs over AKs.

The D and the M variants will take 7.62 AK mags

Saiga makes a 'sporter' rifle that has a buttstock on the back of the receiver and the trigger moved back, but is basically an AK.  It's also very easy to convert the trigger, pistolgrip and buttstock to AK style.  I just picked up a Saiga Sporter in 5.45x39 today to do the conversion on.

$300 at JG Sales right now.  Probably another $200-250 with the parts I'm going to use to convert (ACE side folding stock, Hogue grip and the usual Tapco trigger group)

It takes about .5 seconds longer to reload an AK than an AR, when done properly, and even no difference at all sometimes.

I know how to do AK mag changes, I don't need no Youtube video of some guy showing me how. Ridiculous as it may sound, I actually know a thing or two about both AKs and ARs.

I also know that the AR's mag system is superior to the AKs and it makes mag changes faster and easier.

Mag change times aside, I consider AK mags the most reliable type out there.

Uh huh. Just like when I went to Iraq and we had captured AKs and magazines, many of us had no experience with the AK. We messed around with the AK magazines and instantly realized they were much superior quality than our USGI magazines. The feeder would press down smooth as silk, had an anti-tilt and everything.

The AK mag is high quality. The Russians were smart because MOST of our problems from the AR isn''t the system, it's the magazine.

I have AKs and love them, but variety is the spice of life. I am definitely quicker at changing AR mags, but if I get in a situation where that makes a difference.... I would like another rifle that could use my current, 100% reliable and cheap mags, but offers better ergos and sight options. I am thinking the Sig is probably the only one that is in my price range. Are the MGI and SR-47 considered reliable?

I've been waiting for my 7.62x39 Hydra for about 3 months and haven't heard anything from MGI other than them continually pushing out the lead time.  Be ready to wait.

As far as reliability goes, that remains to be seen.  I'm not buying it for anything other than the desire to play around with it.

Haha, I heard that! I looked at their site with much lust, but it isn't formatted very well. I couldn't find the stripped, modular lowers for sale on their own. The price for a complete rifle, out of stock though, wasn't out of line considering....

I took the plunge March, 2009 and picked up a M10 from Gander Mountian. The rifle shoots better than I can and brakes down just like an Enfield. Two main reasons I purchased the rifle was; one, it shoots 7.62X39(which I have plenty of), two, it takes AK magazines(which I have plenty of too.) Gotta have a way to use those two items if and when AKs are outlawed. A lot of politicians are kicking themselves in the ass for allowing a sunset provision in 1994 AWB.

These stocks are made of Teak from Vietnam. I believe only 280 were originally imported, but halted by the ATF.

Gander Mountian bought the whole lot when the initial Importer went tits up. Gander was selling them at $699.00 OTD.

Would love to have one of those....what sort or accuracy / range do you get out of it?

That would be dumb. The mag system on AKs is their biggest deficiency and the greatest advantage of ARs over AKs.

I was under the impression that the mags on the AR pattern rifles was its greatest weakness.

Push button, drop free mag release with straight magazine insert vs. clip activated mag release and "rock in" insert.

It takes about .5 seconds longer to reload an AK than an AR, when done properly, and even no difference at all sometimes.

Fast foward to 30 seconds...

WoW! That was the fastest AK-47 reload I've ever seen!

SR-47 used by tier 1 commando bunnies with epic weapons transition and tactical roll skills.

someone I know actually managed to get knights to send one to him for test and evaluation and he said it kicked like a mule, none of the guys that tested it wanted to try it on full auto and these were all guys that have shot everything that has a happy switch

The Russians were smart because MOST of our problems from the AR isn''t the system, it's the magazine.

yep. it only took 50 years for decent working AR/m16 mag to finally be made...

but the AK started with a reliable and robust magazine.

M10 goodness...

Neat pic's –––––––– Thanks for posting...!

Somehow I bet that if you listed that for sale here it would sell in a matter of seconds...!

For 1947, the ergos were awesome.  Short stock, good spacing on the comb, pistol grip, no heavier than it needs to be, intuitive, reliable function (face it - there's nothing intuitive about a charging handle), and the sights are "good enough."

Try this test:  Find a 10-year-old in America who has nbever fired a gun before.  Should be easy, just ask one of your kids' friends.  Hand them a magazine full of dummy rounds and an AK.  Tell them to chamber a round and "fire" it.  Now do the same with an AR.  See which one takes them longer.  Now tell them to disassemble them and reassemble them.  See which one takes them longer.  And American kids even have the "advantage" of modern video games showing them how it's done.

We love the AR because we're familiar with it.  It makes sense to us and we can manipulate it without thinking.  Take that away, and the AK is the better weapon.

IMHO, the best advantage of the AR pattern is that it offers the best platform available for optics. (A3 profile, at least)  There's no easy way to put an EOTech on an AK.

You make excellent points, but it's not 1947 anymore.

I own an AK.  It's fun.  It's simple to use.  And I suppose if I was illiterate and couldn't read a manual on how to operate a rifle, it would be easier to figure out.

But, it's 2011, I can read, and the mag catch and selector/safety are in better places on the AR, and the AR has always had better sights (even the M1 had better sights than the AK).  Better accuracy is the icing on the cake.

I am floored that Russians still use the AK.  I don't think the AR is the perfect gun, but I'm surprised the Russians haven't come up with something better than either of them.  I don't know if it's a cost issue, or simply a reflection of their military doctrine.

there's GREAT variation among mags though, you have to be more specific as to which ones are the most reliable type.
