I think 5.45 will be available, but the really cheap surplus will dry up someday just like 556 and 308 has.

For the price of 5.45, buy two or three crates and be set for a looooong time....

Its been coming in by the shipload for well over a decade. It is cheap as it can be and the stockpile overseas is enormous. Just buy a pile of it and stop worrying. I have 11,000 rounds of it in the basement.

domestic 5.45 is available now, and current production imported 5.45 non corrosive ammo is widely available

IIRC the Russian Mil still uses it, not sure about the Polish or Bulgarians. |

I wouldn't worry about it. But I would recommend buying it cheap and stacking it deep to take advantage of the current price. |

5.45 drying up
 Could 7N6 get banned, maybe. If it does, commercial rounds will take it's place. Aim Surplus has Silver Bear 5.45 and Hornady makes commercial 5.45 rounds.
Russia, Bulgaria, and Ukraine currently uses 7N6 rounds for their military, that's like saying will M855 dry up in the U.S. Like I stated earlier, the only thing that will stop 7N6 from being imported is another ban. Let's look at 7.62x39... Yugo M67 is the only mil-spec round being imported these days. It's funny how you can still get Wolf, Brown Bear, Silver Bear, Golden Tiger, etc imported from Russia. If you are really worried, buy cheap and stack deep. I have 7 cases of 7N6 so I'm not really worried about it. |

I thought the same thing when I bought my SAR2 4 years ago. 1000$ in ammo at current prices should last you a loooonnnggggg time.

It is really easy to stock up on. Buy a spam can every few months and you can pile up several thousand rounds no problem. 5.45 is still the standard service round for several nations so it will not be going away.

Brian from AIM said there is still a ton of it overseas. It is being made domestically now as well. Cheap surplus will be around a while. Buy it cheap and stack it deep.

Get the gun and shoot it til all the cheap stuff is gone, then sell it. Realistically it's an AK and surplus ammo, not exactly an investment type firearm. I have a Tantal, I love it, and if the ammo dries up, I'll miss it.

I would only be concerned about a total ammo import ban. Buy enough to last your for years and years.

It's still a current production caliber for a still issued firearm. There's nothing "surplus" about it. I just bought 3- 2160rd cases and still had 3 cases unopened in the basement. Was given 3-1000rd cases of Wolf HP that shoots great through both my '74s. I just wish someone could find more 7.62x51. I don't fire my Radway Green ammo I have laid back due to that fact. Y2K set me up on that stuff. The summer afterwards was a happy time at yard sales.  I just use reloads for my FALs

Remember when we could get 7.62x25 for 6 cents a round four months ago? It went from available to critical in a weeks time, and now is non-existent except for the few guys that are selling their stash on Gunbroker and so forth for THREE-AND-A-HALF-TIMES what it went for just four months ago.
Just goes to show, ammo supplies can get critical fast. I believe there should be more surplus 7.62x25 coming in sometime in the future, but I don't know exactly when. |

If you can get many crates of it, DO IT. Four little words and a signature would stop 99% of 5.45x39mm out there. Domestic 5.45mm would either be Hornady or reloads. If 'H' wants 35 cents a round now, imagine paying a buck a round, easily. |

Glad to know that I'm not the only one buying ammo (and mags) in a caliber I don't even own a gun for yet. Ironically enough I just came from a gun store where I overheard two employees discussing how the 5.45 is drying up. Likely it will be temporary if at all; another place had 4 tins of 5.45 but no 7.62 available. |

And even if the surplus went dry tomorrow, there is still really cheap 5.45 by wolf, brown bear, and silver bear. Prices were increasing alittle bit to 150 a box, then we got a ton more and it went down to 120-130. The price will fluctuate like that for awhile. |
