Thought I would Share my video and experience here with y'all- if it brings a little more awareness to how bad it is here I will be happy.
Definitely some survival type lessons I learned....I will post up my experience in more detail if anyone is interested. Video of the tornado and survivors Video of Aftermath, Survivors, and Casualties Part 3 Roll Tide. Update: Things I'm glad I had: backpacking stove, water filter, headlamp, glock19 and comfortable holster, one candle, gloves, first aid kit things I wish i had: go bag packed with emergency response type gear, more candles, good flashlight, more non perishable food on hand, nalgene type bottles for water. There were tons of things I had that I could have used but they weren't on hand so I didn't have them. I forgot my pocket knife that one day so I didn't have it when I went to help. If it is not ready to go––you won't have it when the time comes. |

Damn, I just skimmed through the videos until I get home. Glad you are okay.

That was too close for comfort, glad you're OK! Were you able to help anyone or see any injuries other than the person being loaded into that pickup?
|
|
I'm not watching those, I'm having nightmares of tornadoes already.
Glad you're safe though. |

In the second video when the camera goes into my pocket it is because I didn't want to film the dead girl we carried out. The last count I heard was 45. I would guess she was mid 20s. The last injury count I heard was 990. The young girl being put in the truck at the beginning was paralyzed. Guys-it is really, really bad. Amazingly the storm missed nearly all student housing. Unfortunately the people who were hit the most are people in low income housing and they lost everything. It is heartbreaking to see. The pregnant woman in my first video and her husband and friend told me they were picked up by the tornado and managed to end up under a tree. |

Amazing stuff, man. Thanks for sharing and helping out like you did.
Sidenote: Girl who said you need to crack the windows...old wive's tell. It'll blow the windows out before it blows the place up from pressure... ;) |

I was fortunate enough not to lose any in my family, but there's so much tragedy all over down there that my heart aches greatly for those that weren't as lucky. My cousin lost one of her best friends(and her friend's daughter) up in Jefferson Co. My thoughts and prayers are with ya'll. God Bless you.

I'm heading back up Monday or so to keep an eye on our house and try to help out. You plan on going back at all? |

I would've gone into those projects in a minute if I thought I could possibly help save human life or suffering. I would just as easily go in there and take the lives of fucking low life looters and thugs. I don't think I'm alone in having had enough of dealing with the scum. Many people will be coming in to provide aid and don't need to be having to deal with them. Shoot on site.

I don't mind helping them out, but if I see them poking through my broken window or walking though my kicked in door they will see the other side. Til then they will still be a human in need.

One thing I've tried to beat into my kid's heads, if severe weather is coming, put on your sturdiest shoes/boots, shirt and long pants. Worst case, these might be the only clothes you'll have for a few days, or until help arrives. I've been fortunate to never have lost everything, but I have friends and relatives not so lucky. Climbing over spintered wood wearing only socks or barefoot is not pleasant Glad you are OK, it's truly amazing the amount of damage done in just a few minutes |

On the subject of looting. Guess what guys: Just because they live in the projects doesn't mean they are bad. Everyone was a victim yesterday. I carried my glock when I went back for things from my friends place but I saw nothing to make me think I needed it. Hesitate before judging anyone too quickly. Would you have shot me carrying a tv and guitar from my friend's place?
The national guard was not in town until very recently and there were Zero emergency responders visible where I was, so if people needed anything I would wholly expect them to break in and find food water or shelter. Please think twice before pulling a gun on someone... The only looting I have heard of is alcohol from convenient stores. It sucks, but it's not people's homes. Looters are monsters, scavengers are survivors. I'll get off my soapbox. |

The fanny pack had a pistol, small first aid kit, flashlight, knife, and a whistle. It was intended for the bump in the night investgations. I could grab a single bag and look around without havng to put on a cover garment and pants which would stay up the gun and holster. The larger bag had food and water for a day or two, flashlight, more first aid equipment, solar blanket, small crank radio. Unfortunately, over the last few years I've allowed things to expire, time to update. I like your having the water filter, headlamp and gloves. I'll need to add them to my bag |

Control those ladies. They were screaming but they were smart and did the right thing 100% of the time. They never questioned me or wandered when I asked them to go and stay in our apartment until I came back. Try to keep your girlfriend from flipping out when they think they are about to die. I may have been hysterical myself if I had understood how very close to death we really were. |

wow, what footage.
I assisted with some relief efforts today north of Birmingham. This freaking thing was long lived and more destructive than I guess anything else I've seen in my nearly 30 years.

And more than just one candle in my apartment to try and gather things by!! Of course my girlfriend and her room mate had ten scented candles lit. I am going to be putting together a better bag...just in case. |

PicsYou can come stay with me if need be brother. I have power and water now.
The-fly hosted my pictures of the wreckage at this link. Still can't believe it's this bad. |

I feel guilty leaving my city like that. I feel awful about leaving when we did too, but my parents and girlfriend were freaking out over the rumors of people getting shot by looters. I am heading back either Monday or Tuesday to help out though. DKE is running a support center out of their house and just sent an email asking for canned food, OTC drugs, toiletries, and diapers. Diapers seem to be the big thing right now in most areas. Apparently there were a large number of infants in Alberta and those projects down by y'all. Still waiting to hear the final plan on water though. I would think they can get the pumps and filtration running again at the rate Alabama Power has been running but it will only take a few days of no water at all for them to ration it.

Yeah in the first video my camera goes in my pocket when two women were passing over their babies to me. That was something to see.
I am thinking I will head back monday or Tuesday as well and spend the week doing what I can. Depends on a lot of things and I will see what the situation looks like. |

I'm glad you safe, we got hit but nothing like that. I'm confused, the original building in video #1 is it still standing? I skimmed through the videos since I have to get up early tomorrow. Also, I assume your a college student? How did the university hold up?
