There's a secondary location in the atlantic that's quite probable, looking at the satellite photos looks pretty scary. link? Ditto. Still think Atlantis was a Platonic Allegory...NOT history. I disagree. Nearly every society in the world has a great flood story that far predates the current bible. The concept of societies destroyed by natural disasters is not fantasy nor is it revolutionary, it is just history. Unfortunately over the course of time it goes from present to past to history to story to legend to myth. Then someone investigates the myth and finds that it really happened. Dragons become dinosaurs and Giant Cyclops bones become mammoths. Imagine what they will think about us in 10k years or so. |

Wasn't Troy a myth until it was found in the mid 1800's... Excellent analogy. |

Meh, on Spain.
I'm putting my money on Graham Hancock's theory. Read "Fingerprints of the Gods." |

Before I don my robe and wizard hat, I do want to say that even though I think Atlantis was absolutely a concoction of Plato's; I DO believe there are definitely "LOST Civilizations" that were very advanced for their time.
This may have even happened more than once....maybe even concurrently. Though the KNOWN evidence of human society seems to point toward a generally acceptable advance of civilization as a whole, I often wonder how much of the puzzle we might be missing. If I had a time machine, I think I would try to go back to some prior to the last great glacial advance just to take a serious look around to fully assess the true "human condition" of the time. |

I would say one look at the Antikytheria Mechanism would justify your doubts, desertmoon.

I guess your not allowed to wave goodbye to the dude..... Heck, I left the thread last night....got involved in the Japan earthquake thread, finally came back here and saw this....I never got to respond to his original question/statement...which I believe was directed at me. |

Ditto. I won't miss it because it's one of the 2 or 3 posters I've ever bothered to block. On topic (admitting I skimmed this thread mostly because of the above and probably missed important stuff) - Fully modern humans have been around for something like 50,000 years (and nearly modern human for 200,000 or so), I don't find it impossible to believe that coastal civilizations we know nothing about suffered a cataclysm which erased evidence of their existence. I especially find intriguing the idea that raising sea levels from the melting ice sheets 10,000 years ago flooded a seagoing culture and set back human development (Clive Cussler "Atlantis Found") and the Sphinx dates to those times. I also find the Star Wars universe and psychic powers intriguing, I'm not sure which of the three has a better chance of being true. The Atlantis on the coast of Spain thing ... If one was to use the name "Atlantis" to mean "any city that flooded and was abandoned beyond the Pillars of Heracles", then sure. Sometimes it sucks being a starry eyed realist. |

Detroit will be the next Atlantis but no one will look for it.

Wasn't there some prophecy somewhere that said Atlantis would be discovered right before the "end times"? no. Thanks to the internet, there is now! |

Well shit! I was just in Rota, Spain (actually Costa Ballena) over Christmas!! I was about 10 miles from where this is at... I found it interesting that there was a MAJOR Roman city just north of where Atlantis is said to be. When I was in the fourth grade(1972) our teacher got sick and the school principal came to our class and he spent the rest of the day regaling us with tales of Atlantis and Greek mythology. It was all off the cuff and he was a great story teller.
We sat mesmerized for the rest of the day. This was probably the best day of school I had over the course of 14 years or so of education. |

So, anyone watch the Nat Geo Special? Was it all it was cracked up to be?
