BULLETIN TSUNAMI MESSAGE NUMBER 1 NWS PACIFIC TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER EWA BEACH HI 756 PM HST THU MAR 10 2011 TO - CIVIL DEFENSE IN THE STATE OF HAWAII SUBJECT - TSUNAMI WATCH A TSUNAMI WATCH IS ISSUED FOR THE STATE OF HAWAII EFFECTIVE AT 0756 PM HST. AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS ORIGIN TIME - 0746 PM HST 10 MAR 2011 COORDINATES - 38.0 NORTH 142.9 EAST LOCATION - NEAR EAST COAST OF HONSHU JAPAN MAGNITUDE - 7.9 MOMENT EVALUATION BASED ON ALL AVAILABLE DATA A TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN GENERATED BY THIS EARTHQUAKE THAT COULD BE DESTRUCTIVE ON COASTAL AREAS EVEN FAR FROM THE EPICENTER. AN INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A TSUNAMI THREAT TO HAWAII. IF TSUNAMI WAVES IMPACT HAWAII THE ESTIMATED EARLIEST ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST TSUNAMI WAVE IS 0259 AM HST FRI 11 MAR 2011 MESSAGES WILL BE ISSUED HOURLY OR SOONER AS CONDITIONS WARRANT.

There's a tsunami warning every time someone rips ass. Pretty soon people will start ignoring them, then an actual tsunami will hit and kick them all in the nuts. Kinda like tornado warnings.

The tornado warnings are issued a bit liberally, but if someone wants to ignore them it isn't the NWS' fault. I personally fire up GRLevel2 AE and have a closer look, knowledge is power especially in disaster-prone areas. Not that PA is really disaster-prone, but I can still watch from the sidelines

Effectively the same active plate that killed nearly 200 people in Christchurch, New Zealand just recently. It is not unusual for the Pacific region to have related quakes/tsunamis within a short period of time.

I remember a thread in the survival forum from a guy who found a correlation between solar flares and big earth quakes a few days later. We just had a big solar last week or so.
