I picked this job up from another form. Apparently The last owner was a real butcher and managed to distroy 70% of the parts in the kit including the barrel, trunion, and rsb. I opted to cut the old rivits off and do a weld build. Got the first kit for $115 shipped. I then picked up some replacement parts that had some character and a replacement parts kit to finish the build. http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1001/ak4s.jpg http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/214351000/214351221/pix490524701.jpg http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/214470000/214470247/pix179674134.jpg http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/214470000/214470247/pix070361699.jpg http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/215280000/215280299/pix008756155.jpg http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/215280000/215280299/pix773904462.jpg http://pics.gunbroker.com/GB/215280000/215280299/pix930820098.jpg |

Now, I wanted a "range beater/battlefield pickup" so I pulled the barrel with RIG and rusted it with bleach.
http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/7483/055qs.jpg http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/9907/054uwv. http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/230/056bd.jpg The second video has a FAIL. What happined was I did not clean all of the grease out of the inside of it before the test, sand and dirt got in the chamber and when it fired it jammed tight and ripped the lip of the casing off. BTW, a ak cleaning rod is to short to tap a stuck round from the chamber.....I eneded up getting a small "sample" snap on screw driver from another shooter. Long story short after 20 minutes of modding it I used it, the cleaning rod, and a rock to knock the stuck caseing out of the chamber. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ejfe_J0kBNQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91OFlJ2HUF0 So after we cleared the stuck caseing we cleaned it the traditional way to remove the grit from the chamber. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsVPlVIKdco I guess I should have waited till it dried to fire it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rn6F6ywVxYo |

The staples in the handguard are a nice touch. You should have used a shovel handle for the butt stock for that authentic 'been there, done that' look.
I'm actually probably going to replace those handguards with a romanian pot belly.
I built an AK for my buddy that I welded. It was my first one. That was 3 years ago. He called me the other day to tell me how good it still shot.

Me and a friend have been talking about going in togeather and getting a bead blasting/park/hot blueing setup.
This will probably end up being a test gun for blueing. The only real issue I had with the gun was two of the spot welds failed in the rear trunion (because we were throwing it off a roof top) I drilled out the welds, clamped, and rewelded. I really welded the heck out of it this time, from the top and bottom. The down side is I have to modify its stock, the up side is it wont fail again..... With the action being clean and the welds fixed I dont expect any future issues with the rifle. |
Cool build. I liked it with the barrel in the white. Please update us when you've finished tinkering with it.

I don't remember the name, but I seem to remember that he was in Florida and was about to go into the USAF at the time. Maybe this will ring a bell for someone here.

OP,
I believe you have what it takes to be the next great contributor in GD. You have technical ability, a flair for the absurd, and are willing to document it all in pictures and youtube clips. Keep doing your thing. I look forward to your future posts. |

Looks like a damn movie gun! I did too, then he added rust. |
You have to add the rust to get all the different parts looking the same.
Wait until you see the new pictures, Still not done with it but it looks 1000X better than it did. |
I switched it back to the wire stock, The wood was really starting to wear on me.
Awesome work. If I found a parts kit could I have anyone build it for me? what does that run usually?
What was wrong with the build before you got it? Those rivets didn't look too good but they looked serviceable.
The barrel was trashed, it looked like it was beat up when he hammered it out and then it was cleaned up using a dremel tool, The chamber appeared to have been "smoothed" out with a small sanding drum. The factory rsb was broken (from being hammered off) and the gas tube was dremelled to death. Basically I bought a reciever and a bunch of junk parts. On top of that the origional trunion was cracked and replaced with one from a unknown type of AK.
I could have easily did a rivet build myself but I did not want to invest in the tools for just one build. Truthfully this is just a project to pass the time until my colt 6933 gets here. |
Made a few small changes. The upper handguard is from a m1 carbine.

I was going to put up the videos, but they might not be CoC compliant
Did you just fill the holes with wire until it over flowed? Did you... aw nevermind.
