Can someone explain what's going on in the beginning? It looks like the victim was way ahead of the cameraman and the assailants were yelling something like "why were you talking trash" to the victim when he popped out of somewhere around the corner? Too dark for me to make out much.

ETA: After watching that part again, it was pretty unintelligible but it sounded like the one yout was saying "Yo whats up, [you were?] hollering, do something", or something like that.

The "mah baby didn't do nuffin' crowd would be outraged at the gun violence that plagues the streets of our 'fine town'. Gene Cox would have showed his best 'I'm shocked' face at how the upscale culture of Richmond has somehow been violated.

Richmond is essentially a lost cause. The good people who live in the new apartment complexes in the area intentionally blind themselves to the danger of this. In fact, many think of it as a badge of honor from engaging in some form of 'cool risk'. However, a good video always has the effect of shocking people into just how fast life can go sideways for you.

I am positive that this couldn't be a hate crime... Multiple assailants = lethal threat. To bad our victim didn't have the means and mindset to lawfully defend himself from a vicious, potentially lethal attack. I hope he is still alive and recovers.

I live in Richmond. And this happens all the time. I've lived in shockoe bottom, the Fan, and Jackson Ward. I've had a couple of hairy situations down that way. I've been out of the area for a good time now and life is definitely a lot less interesting but my Dad still lives in the fan. Yesterday he texted me about a robbery right outside his front door. The conversation went like this:

(He is very anti-gun)

Dad: Robbery outside my house last night.
Me: Don't you think it's time to get your CHP.
Dad: No thats why I always wear running shoes.
Me: Wow I wasn't aware you can outrun bullets.
Dad: I'm quick like that.

Today he texted me about this. The conversation was:

Dad: Call me after you get off. I want to talk about getting a gun. There was another robbery at the end of my block.
Me: Will do.

I called him when I got off but he didn't answer. So I sent him a link to the youtube video and hopefully that will convince him.
