I managed to bury one up to the driver's window in Graf many years ago.
 Never double dog dare me to try and make the mud hole.  The CO was not happy.  |

Not to nit pick, but neither of those are an M977.
This thread needs MOAR truck pictures.
The nomenclature for the wrecker is an M984, and the second one is likely an M985 which has the heavier MHC (crane). I started out driving the M1074 PLS in the ammo section of Service Battery for a self propelled cannon battalion. The M1074 is equipped with the mid-ship crane, whereas the M1075 version does not have the crane. Both have the palletized loading system. 
When we switched to MLRS, we got the M985 HEMTT. The only real difference between the M985 and the M977 is the crane. The M977 only has a 4500# crane, whereas the M985 has a 6000# crane to lift heavy pods like the ATACMS. 
The M985 also has brackets bolted to the floor of the cargo bed where the feet for the pods sit when loaded. 
Me at the controls! I loved these things. 
Now that I work full time as a firefighter, I'd love to get my hands on the TFFT, which is the HEMTT fire truck. It's my favorite truck AND it's a fire truck. What could be better right? 
I hear they aren't very user friendly and the guys don't really like them, but to me they are sexy as hell. 
PS... I agree with you though OP... If I ever have the money to do so, I WILL have a HEMTT. |

If you get one and need drivers training, I'll be there to help. I think I've even got an old TM 9-2320-279-10 laying around somewhere. What kind of nerd memorizes the TM number from a truck he hasn't even touched for nearly 6 years... ?

I used to work for a company (Simula, now acquired by BAe Systems) that made armor kits for the HET, HEMMT, PLS, the up-armored HMMWV, and the civilian tractor-trailer (can't remember its military designation). Every one of them went straight to Dover for a flight to the Middle East.

So there is a PLS with a crane built in that can still drop flat racks? Never knew that wish we had them instead of having to use a cargo HEMMT to download LHS's(dropping jersy barriers in Iraq). The LHS and PLS(havent got to drive one yet  ) Are great platforms. Versatile as hell. Rugged as hell. Just pray you never lose power steering.
The PLS above is now on my wish list for SHTF vehicle if I ever have the money get one w/ trailer and a dozen flat racks.

It always did, and still always does, look funny to me when I see a PLS that doesn't have the crane and couldn't imagine using one that didn't. The location of the crane controls right at mid-ships under the crane was a bit awkward and we almost always used the remote controls when we set up ammo supply points in the field like the one pictured above. We could have done everything with HEMTT's, but it was really convenient to use the LHS. At the ASP we'd drop the rack and let the civilian guys load all the powder and rounds on the rack while it was on the ground and pull it up. In the field we'd just use the crane to put stuff onto a battery ammo PLS's that came through, or some times directly into the M548's |

I always liked sleeping under the stars on the large flat area on the back of the HEMAT trailers. It's a great place to carry stuff, except it gets dusty in a hurry and we always had to throw a tarp or poncho over any personal gear. 
Here's what our guys did between the tires of a HEMTT!

They're great as long as you're not on wet hardball....then a HEMTT will swap ends soooo fast,you won't really know what's going on. EXTREAMELY easy to lock up.
On the civilian side....good luck with the Silver 92...you'll need it. Detroit Diesel doesn't like supporting those 2strokers anymore. They're good for spinning bearings,and blowing head gaskets. Yes,they can be fun to drive once getting off pavement....the front/rear winch is a neat option. Spent lots of time driving an M978,slept between the rails atop the tank. |
