New Australian footage of Neil Armstrong's moon walk

– Tue Sep 28, 5:46 am ET

SYDNEY (AFP) – Long-lost footage of Neil Armstrong descending the ladder of the Apollo 11 lunar module will be screened in public for the first time in Sydney next week, a prominent astronomer told AFP.

The footage runs for a few minutes and is considered to be some of the best footage of the historic 1969 moonwalk, but the film was lost in archives for many years and was badly damaged when found, said John Sarkissian.

It depicts the first few minutes of Armstrong's descent which was recorded in Australia as NASA was still scrambling for a signal, showing a far clearer image than was initially screened worldwide.

Telescopes in remote Australia played a key role in the Apollo 11 mission, including provision of the television signal, after Armstrong decided to attempt the moonwalk early, putting the United States just beyond the horizon.

Sarkissian –– historian and astronomer in charge of the Australian side of the recordings restoration project –– said the unseen minutes were the "best quality of Armstrong descending the ladder."

"NASA were using the Goldstone (California) station signal, which had its settings wrong, but in the signals being received by the Australian stations you can actually see Armstrong."

"In what people have seen before you can barely see Armstrong at all, you can see something black –– that was his leg."

The segment which runs for "just a few minutes" will be screened at the awards night of Australian Geographic magazine next Wednesday, at which Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin will be the chief guest.

"When we heard Buzz was going to be the guest of honour we thought 'what a great opportunity'," Sarkissian said.

The Armstrong footage, which has only previously been seen by Apollo veterans and other members of the astronomy community, would form part of a highlights reel of restored, digitised moonwalk footage at the awards, he added.

There was a "long detective story" involved in the search for the footage and Sarkissian said it took painstaking frame by frame work to shift the material from the deteriorating black and white film to digitial format.

"It was very damaged tape as well, that segment of Armstrong at the beginning," he said.

Digitising the recording was "significant in the space flight history context" allowing it to be preserved and copied for future generations, said Sarkissian.

Faked moon landings are old news- what about WW2? I think THAT is the conspiracy of the century. I mean come on, the whole world fighting at once....against a super evil villian.....all that grainy black & white footage.....and the good guys win? Seems a little too easy to me. Obviously made up.

Wow. So the lunar landing is a hoax? Free popcorn. ... Where did all those rockets go? Just window dressing?

I hope that you are kidding if you think the moon landings were faked.

They, the Aussies, were the only ones to get live video of the first walk.
They played the incoming video on a tv and put a camera in front of it and transmitted that
to the other side of the world for us to see.
What we Americans saw was video of a tv playing live video.

We are lucky they archived it. Big thumbs up for the down under.

I remember being on vacation with my family at the Glacier National Park (northern Montana) during the moon landing.
Park rangers had set up a TV outside so people could watch live coverage.

I also remember looking at the TV, and then looking up at the moon, and looking back at the TV in wonder.

This was during daylight in Montana, so it must have been the landing I was watching and not the first steps onto the moon.
Landing = 4:18 p.m. EDT on July 20, 1969
First walk = 10:56 p.m. EDT on July 20, 1969

Faked?
I do not believe that.

This time it will be lots better though, because Armstrong will be played by Tom Hanks with Ron Howard directing.

Funny story:

First off, my wife and I are space nerds.  We even hit up KSC for a day on our honeymoon.

I was coming back from travel a few years ago.  This was around the time that Huntsville just opened the new Davidson Center (its a large new building to house one of the few remaining Saturn V's).

Anyways, so I am walking down the long ramp past airport security towards the main terminal.  I notice an old couple going through security as I was passing the other way.  I also noticed a few of the blue flightsuits walking out, these look like the same suits the space campers wear.  Nothing un-usual in Huntsville.

As I get closer to the end of the ramp, I see my wife jumping up and down excited as hell pointing at the couple in the security line.  I think "Wow, shes really happy to see me.  Great!"  I finally walk up to my wife she starts to say....

Her: "Hey did you see who what was?"

Me: "Who, the older folks?"

Her: "Yes.  That was Jim Lovell."

Me: "Huh? THE Jim Lovell?"

Her: "Yes."

Me: "And, you didnt talk to him???  You didnt run up and tell me?"

Her: "Sorry, I was too excited."

Me:

Turns out that was Captain Jim Lovell, and the blue suits were real Astronauts escorting him.

I missed a golden opportunity to meet a living American hero.  Oh well, maybe next time.

Well, you see, the 'rocket' isn't actually powered by fuel.  The column of "smoke" you see is actually steam vapors because the launching pad isn't for launching anything.  It is actually a drilling platform for which Haliburton uses to drill into the center of the Earth.  Tapping into the Earths core is how they power their weather machine.

Yea.....Yea, that's it!

My ex sister-in-law worked for NASA for many years. Their ability to lose records and data from projects once they're not funded is completely believable. Engineers would have to store stuff in their garages or it would be thrown out.

supposedly one of the main reasons people believe we never went is because of some radiation belt that people cant live through and appareantly the russians were aware of this thus they never landed and the reason why we havent "been back". Myself i'm open to arguments from both sides i tend to believe we did actually go.

As they should.  For all the research and effort put into something like this, for someone to then show up and say you just faked all of it would piss me off too.

I just got through about 130 of the comments at the link.  Unless they're all trolling, the number of people who (presumably) vote who insist that the landings were faked, together with their ignorant theories as to why they were impossible, makes me weep for our nation.

Everyone knows that the CIA faked the moon landings to cover up their assassination of JFK because he found out about their plan to smuggle a muslim kenyan child to the US so they could put him in as president to keep people from finding out that we blew up the not yet built WTC because it was so tall that you could look out the top window and see that the earth is flat.

It's so simple, you would have to be an idiot not to see the obvious connections.
