Massive wildfire, People's Republic of Boulder, Colorado:

No estimates of fire size. It just started and went huge!!! It's really windy today.

They are starting to evacuate some areas now...

Live radio feed of Boulder Fire/SO
They are running their asses off. There is significant confusion as ES tries to make sense of what is burning and where. There are new fires popping up and they can't see because of the smoke. Tones are dropping left and right and the traffic is nonstop.

Hope they are OK!

Yow!

Brush fire gone wild or structure fire start? Edit - ok, wildfire - that's a bigun alright. Am guessing the area is a tad parched this time of the year

Mutual aid is just starting to arrive at staging.

The winds are shifting messing up their plan.

Major evacuations, reverse 911 notification, but some of the planned evac routes are now blocked due to the wind shift!

The Fourmile narrow gauge track was active from about the 1860s through the early 1900s.

GOLD HILL, Colo. (CBS4) ― A wildfire is burning north of Boulder on Fourmile Canyon Road.

Emergency crews were responding quickly to the blaze and it appeared that some evacuations were being ordered.

The fire broke out in the mountainous area –– near Gold Hill –– sometime after 10 a.m.

11 news Meteorologist Brian Bledsoe is in the area and says the fire is getting worse by the minute.

According to the U.S. Forest Service, the fire danger on Colorado's Front Range on Monday ranges from Moderate to Very High.

Smoke appears above Boulder from a wildfire burning Monday morning. Photo by Paul Aiken / The Camera A wildfire is burning in the foothills northwest of Boulder.

The fire is in Fourmile Canyon, according to dispatch officials with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. No injuries have been reported.

Emergency crews are responding and an area 3 miles in radius from the center of Gold Hill is being evacuated.

A number of roads have been "compromised" in the vicinity of the fire, leaving Sunshine Canyon Drive as the only means of access up the mountain for emergency crews, according to scanner traffic. A roadblock set up along Sunshine Canyon Drive was moved east because of heavy smoke and ash in the area.

More information will be posted as soon as it becomes available.

Big mistake! It was actually just a giant cloud of marijuana smoke from all those medicinal smokers.

But seriously, there are a ton of houses up there. It is moving too fast. There are going to be a lot of structures lost. They are just trying to get people out before the evac routes are cut. Everything is a scramble. My friend in Boulder says it looks like the apocalypse is coming.

That's well within range of a giant snake ash.  You better just go ahead and bug out now before shit really gets bad.

Boulder County wildfire forces evacuations, grows quickly in strong winds
Web Staff KDVR Denver
12:16 PM MDT, September 6, 2010

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. - A wind-whipped wildfire broke out in Boulder County Monday morning and it quickly grew in size and out of control. The fire started near Emerson Gulch Rd. and Four Mile Canyon Dr. Evacuations were underway at midday. The Boulder County Sheriff's Office said structures were threatened.

Boulder County sheriff's deputies were ordering mandatory evacuations in the area of Dixon Rd. and Gold Run Rd. The town of Gold Hill was under voluntary evacuations. A witness at the Gold Hill Inn told FOX31 News evacuations were taking place.

Authorities also ordered evacuations in Four Mile Canyon and Sunshine Canyon. Those areas were also closed.

Emergency shelters were being opened at the Nederland Community Center and at the North Boulder Recreation Center.

There were also reports fire officials called for air drops to help fight the fire.

Joshua lives in Boulder. "Scary stuff. We live down off of 28th and Iris and the sun is blocked out by the smoke and there is a little bit of ash falling."

Firefighters from several agencies were called to help fight the fire. One report said at least 12 engines were dispatched to the town of Gold Hill for structure protection.

Colorado Highway 119 was closed between Nederland and Boulder because of the fire.

This is a developing story. Check KDVR.com as new information becomes available.

Extremely high. I was going to go to some peaks today, but decided to stay home because of the fx for 40mph winds with 60mph gusts.

When the winds are high enough, wildfires can spot new blazes up to a couple miles ahead of itself.  What they ran into back in the 90s with that big blaze (3 separate fires) in central Washington (Wenatchee/Cashmere/Leavenworth area).  We were glued to the scanner since the fires had our canyon bracketed; spent a lot of time prepping to evac and clearing the property of anything burnable.  Several times I stayed late at work (auto parts store) to await a crew member to get to town to get a starter, alternator, etc for rigs that broke down.  The night Sugarloaf mountain went was epic.  Could hear folks talking back and forth on the scanner as they were fighting that part of the blaze; then someone popped in and said something about she was going to go and for folks to get out; about an hour later the whole mountain went up, lit up the entire sky.

Y'all keep your eyes and ears open, and stay safe.

It's not Boulder, it's Boulder County up near Gold Hill.  Some roads are blocked, some fire-escape routes through private land are in use.  People out first, then they're worrying about animals like horses.  A number of homes were gone an hour ago; dunno updates on structures.

As far as the "hippie" comments, one lady live on the phone was asked if she was evacuating.  She said she had her pets and her gun and was ready to get out.
