I am looking for a good war movie, but don't want a liberal, military bashing movie. I know it made the rounds on the boards, but I can't remember what the consensus was.
Any input appreciated. Doc |

If you don't want a liberal, military-bashing movie, then skip this one.
anything with Jake Gyllehall (or however you spell it) is neither yay or nay, it is ghey
I'm sorry but Donnie Darko is fucking badass |
(and yes, I know he is banging Kirsten Dunst, but when he doesn't have the integrity to turn down the most blatant homosexual role in hollywood history, I won't see his movies) |
End of story. Nay. |
I'm not defending him, hes a queer and probably not really doing all that much banging Kirsten Dunst. I was just pointing out his first and last good movie. |

Put the politics asside and I considered it a pretty good flick. Covered some of the less known sides of war.
Thanks,
Man, I miss the John Wayne style movies...........you remember...............when the US military were actually the GOOD guys . Doc |
Nay. Read the book and you will be dissapointed(with the book). Dont even waste your time with the movie.
The story deal more with one solder than the war, he never even fires his rifle in anger
ETA: I liked it. |
Yea... it is not a war movie. |
I liked it. Especially when they had they chance to finally become real time snipers and they were told to stand down.
And I also loved the visuals of them going through the burning oil fields. And one of the funniest/tragic scenes all year is when the one guy watches his Dear John tape with his whole company. |
Ooooo, I so missed the multiple "Jarhead" threads started daily in November. I'm so glad they're back! MORE!!!!!!!!
it wasnt a terrible. swoford is an unmitigated asshole, a liar and a plagiarist but the only part of the movie i called bullshit on is when he holds his fellow Marine at gunpoint. no way it would have gone down like that.
I tried to read the book. I couldn't finish it. I often wish he had succeded in killing himself instead of chickening out when he had the chance. |
Jarhead sucked ass. I have to say, though - That idiot Jake Gylynhall was the perfect choice to play that idiot Swoford.
I was not happy with the movie when I saw it....did not live up to the expectations I had from the previews..... it is NOT on my list of DVDs to get.

I thought R. Lee Emery had the most blatant homosexual role in Hollywood history in the movie "Saving Silverman". |
HEll Yeah... DOnnie Darko goes down as one of my Favorites |

Well, I wanted to come back to this thread. I bought the moive based on the reviews by ARFCOM members. I suspected whether you liked or the movie or not, since it was based on one guys experience, would really depend on whether you were in the service or not. The tip off was how one poster discribed how the author would switch from love to hate. Well, that my experience in the military.
I enjoyed the movie a lot. It did a better average job of showing that love hate relationship. I especially liked how it dealt with stress from the hurry up and wait and how the characters transitioned their character development. This is despite the leading actor and a less than lack luster Jaimie Fox performance which was made up in great part by the writing which used alot of old military jargon. I especially like the movie subject matter which is the Desert Stormr veteran. Overshadowed by Iraq much like Korea was over shadowed by Vietnam, its good to see some recognition. The entire oil field scenes were great from many aspects. The cinematography was excellent in these scenes. The movie indirectly brings light to the conditions the soldiers were under in those fields which is now a major health concern for the Desert Storm veteran. Not mentioned in the movie, I do find that topic amasing that we can all agree a bird covered with oil is in deep shit but a human, well maybe not. In all a pretty decent story dealing with the transition of a civilian to veteran combining the love hate relationship with how they transition from "What the hell did I do" to "I'm changed forever." It is not a movie for the I want to see gratutous action. Its a character development movie with some great settings and some gratutous weapons systems. With that in mind, it is a either you like it or not with those having been in similar situations more identifying with it than those who haven't. Tj |

What exactly qualifies as such? |

BIG +1 At last, an intelligent reply. Sorry for quoting the whole damned thing but it bears repeating. As opposed to, say, a lame "IT SUCKS!" with no explanation of why, especially because it absolutely does not. |
based on tomjefferson's review I'll at least rent it. I', 1 of those enjoyed thin red line people so I might enjoy it, agree with it or not.

I think TJ and Imust have served in the same unit and didn't know it. So many people that were in the mil and got out look back at it with nostalgia and pride, as they should, but they also tend to forget alot of those nasty little aspects about it that can really make it hell for you. I'm not just talking about the ruck marches and all the times your balls were chafed raw from them, or the times you and your buddies got into it good with the local cops and got locked up, etc. Those were the good times! What I am talking about is the hopes of an honorable, perfectly structured society that the military entices you as, and claims to be. That the life is all honor, and that in the end the sacrifices were all worth it. But thats not true for everybody. It's true that the frustration of the bureaucracy can very easily push you over the edge, hence the pt formation snipers. But to me, what Jarhead was really about was showing you the battles that go on inside you, the individual. Most of the time people dont realize how fucked up they really are, and that's what I mostlytook away form that movie. I had just gotten back from Iraq when it came out, and for me it was just about every emotion I had ever experienced in my time there: anger, frustration, resentment, regret, and ultimately depression. Just about anybody that has been there has experienced it to a degree...and if you were there and you didnt, than I envy you. The movie won't make much sense to civilians or those who have never spent a long amount of time in a combat zone, but for many of us who were there it's a bit closer to home than we realize... |

I saw the movie. I don't understand why everybody here is saying it's anti-war / liberal whatever. Maybe I just have a bad memory. It seemed like an honest story of an individual's experience in the marines.
If you want a good military movie, then checkout STATESIDE. If you can get past the "love story" in it, then it's worth seeing. Brings back memories. You won't find a bunch or shooting and shit, but if you're curious what boot camp / basic training is REALLY like, it's good. Things aren't quite as extreme anymore, but it's still basically what it's like. I disagree with most people here about jarhead. I think it was . . . okay. |
It was below average. Actually, it sucked. Get "We were soldiers", "Saving Private Ryan", "The Green Berets", or "Black Hawk Down". "The Great Raid" is also very good.
BIG PLUS ONE FOR BOTH OF YOU |

If you are looking for a "war" flick this ain't it. Find something else.
But, if you were in the Corps in the 80s or early 90s, then this movie is excellent because it does a good job capturing the attitude and horseplay of Marine infantrymen, and will make you laugh at some of the shit they did as you remember similar stuff you did (although I never saw anyone get branded like they did, must have been a 1st Mar Div thing, and I was in the 2nd Mar Div). I didn't see it as a military bashing movie like so many people claim (but then again, so many people thought Saving Pvt. Ryan was a "military bashing movie" and I thought it was the greatest war movie ever made). Semper Fi |
I liked it myself as long as you are not expecting a war movie it is decent
what really surpirsed me is that my dad a army lifer retired out E-9 really liked it (he rented it this weekend ) and he useally is uber-sensitive to military bashing in movies he thought it was a a pretty honest look at the everyday bullshit when deployed in some shithole |
A movie that points out that the military is stressful, dangerous, hard on relationships, sometimes VERY hard on the servicemembers, full of redtape, some hypocracy .. . .. is NOT a "military bashing" movie. Those of us who've been there know this. It's just the truth and it shows what we go through.
I was not offended at all by jarhead. Fahrenheit 911 was anti military and pissed me off! I only wanted to see it for the part when W is playing golf. He says "we have to track down the terrorists wherever they are . . . . now watch this drive"! bwa haha. That was good. But anyway my girl and I walked out on it. I was disgusted by that movie. libtards It's funny that people say jarhead was military bashing, but everybody loves full metal jacket???? |
it was enjoyable, in my opinion it did have sort of a leftish tone, but still enjoyable, but dissapointing waiting for some combat that never happened.
Hell yeah. +1 I think it was dissapointing for the main character too, 'cause that's what he's trained and waited for, but it was also a blessing. . . |
Not to get too far off topic here, but if you are looking for an awesome war movie, check out a Korean movie called "Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War." It's every bit as awesome as "Saving Private Ryan" and it was not made in Hollywood with Hollywood politics or actors.
I've passed that movie up a few times at Hollywood Video. Is it subtitled? What is it about? |
It's a movie about the Korean War. One brother gets drafted to fight and his older brother signs up to watch him and keep him safe. It is subtitled, there may even be a dubbed English track on the DVD too but I didn't check - subtitles are good enough for me. The production values are very high and what politics it does have are about watching out for family, loyalty, duty, that kind of thing. Highly recommended. |

I dug it. I was hoping for some shots fired in anger though. I bought it when it came out on dvd I've watched it a couple times. It's no Platoon or Black Hawk Down but I think it's a really accurat depiction of the time period. Interesting to watch.
