Rising to the Challenger: Detroit auto show debut for Dodge muscle coupe concept
BOB GRITZINGER
Posted Date: 11/20/05

To all those purists who still can’t forgive Dodge for building a four-door Charger, here’s your answer: the 2006 Dodge Challenger concept. The Dodge boys released a sketch of the car to the world, but we obtained these exclusive spy photos of the car, which will premiere at the North American International Auto Show in January in Detroit.

Challenger draws on the 1970 model as the icon of the series, says Tom Tremont of Chrysler’s Pacifica studio in California. But instead of merely recreating that car, designers tried to build the Challenger most people see in their mind’s eye, without imperfections like the tucked under wheels and long front overhang of the old car. At the same time, the concept incorporates distinctive Challenger cues like the rear fender kick, wide mouth front end, functional hood scoops and rectangular exhaust tips.

Built on a shortened Chrysler 300/Dodge Charger chassis (116-inch wheelbase vs. 120 inches), the Challenger gets a 6.1-liter Hemi hooked to a six-speed manual transmission with a pistol grip shifter.

All that’s left to ponder is “will they build it?” With all the hardware in place and a primed marketplace, we can’t see why Dodge wouldn’t rise to this challenge.

Well..there goes more of my $!  There is no way, NO WAY this vehicle is produced and there isn't one in easy610s drive!!!!  Hemi with a pistol grip?!?!?!?!?!?  Are you kidding me?????

I am soooooooooooo excited I can hardly type!!

AMEN!

I look to the Ford redesigned Mustang...they did a great job updating the style but keeping a VERY retro look.  Hope Dodge follows suit.

Don't count on it - the Charger concept looked significantly different than the production version.

My prediction is that they're going to want the Magnum/Charger/Challenger parts to interchange as much as possible to keep it cheap, so it's going to end up basically as a 2 door Charger.

That's just fine with me. Hemi, IRS, 5 speed auto, bulletproof mercedes suspension.  You know there are plenty of viper 6 speed manuals that would fit in.
The only drawback is they are a little on the heavy side, but most new cars are nowadays...

I'm like...MAN.  Whats with all the negative vibes, Maurioritty.....Don't say that....you never know what tomorrow brings....Besides used cars drop in price greatly....'Course this car, atleast the well optioned one will prob hold its value well.

A HEMI with a 6 speed pistol grip!?!?!?  Now I can right the wrong of my father who failed to buy that 1971 'Cuda when it was only $5000 new in 1970....now the right 1971 hemi 'Cuda sells for WEEEELLL over one million dollars....I know, I know this car ain't that car and it'll never sell for that money, but I can get a reiable true muscle car brand new!!!!

I had to bother my wife with these photos as she got out of the shower this morning before work...she's like, "...your fathers gone crazy again kids!"

If it has more horsepower than the new 2006 GTO I'll think about it; otherwise.... I'll pass. The new GTO has 400 HP and 400 ft/lbs. of torque. Drop a supercharger on that baby pushing 10-12 lbs of boost... and whoa mama I'm in heaven.

Per Huggy-Bear the word on the street is they're using th motor out of the Charger SRT-8 which is a bonafide 426 c.i.d. HEMI (6.1L) producing...what else....425 HP and somewhere around 475 ft lbs of torque....YYEEOOOOWWW-ZZZAAAA!  The numbers are no joke and the SRT-8 should be in showrooms by years end.....

I can se me going thru tires at a rapid rate!  WEEEEEE//Look Ma!  I'm sideways in the first 4 gears!!

V-Rod,
Nice pic!  Was going to throw up one of my 'Cuda but all the pics are on the old computer...gotta transfer them over...

1972 'Cuda 340 4-spd.  Blk/Blk...Very good condition.  All solid...guy before me did the body and did a great job.  Paint is like a mirror....not authentic looking (quality control was for shit in the 70's at Chrysler!) but real shinny!

Back in 96 I sold my 73 Cuda 340 4spd 3:91 Brown/Black for 4500.00 to start my own business. Now I can't find them for less than 20k, I may have a better chance of finding a good deal if they would retro the Challenger/Cudas

Duh!  Me stupid! You're right....6.6L, the old TA angine was a 400 or 401...what was I thinking....426 would be more like 6.9.....oops.  Time to Google....425 HP and 420 ft lbs......Don't know where I got those numbers before!  Used to be able to remember all those kind of stats...age is getting me!

426 cubic inches equals 7000 cc's, other wise, 7 liters.

I think it would be kick ass if Mopar brought back the 426. The ZO6 Vette and the STS-V are the only new GM cars that I can get excited about, but Mopar is bringing out some okay stuff lately. They can keep the Charger though.

If DC will build the Challenger as is ie: two door, big engine, and 6 speed they'll sell a ton.

Great spy photo, sweet ride. I live in Michigan about 15 minutes from the Chelsea proving grounds. One of my neighbors is a test driver for Dodge. In his opinion the SRT 300 got past the sensors at Dailmer because it rode the coatails of the Hemi. To that effect he said the car is probably the fastest sedan in it's class and is a great buy for the money. I see "black bag" cars here on Rt 94 all the time but yet to see the Challenger.

One of my neighbors here in Plymouth (engineer, don cha know) brought home a GT-40 waay before they were brought out for sale.  He stopped by knowing I'm a HUGE car fan.  THAT is another very nice car....but these Cryslers are more my speed..at least more my price range!

Thanks for the post legalese77.  Very cool.  Also, if interested (can you tell I AM VERY INTERESTED?!?!?!) there is another great write-up in Motor Trend, with some new shots I hadn't seen yet.

BUT, the MT article states a distressing thought.  Says MaMopar is looking to change around the LX(?) platform (Charger/300/Magnum) in 2010.  They plan to modify the platform but keep the models.  The inside word is that would be a perfect time to make a shortened version of the same platform for the Challenger to ride on.  That means no Challenger until 2010 or later!  SUM'BITCH!  I hope they don't make us (I mean ME) wait that long.....

426 CI isnt 6.1L

Per the Chysler bailout,Chrysler had to dismantle tooling for the big-block.

The bail out had nothing to do with their stupid decision to scrap all the big block tooling. It happened before there even was a bail out.  However, they have re-created the tooling, except the new stuff is better. You can buy a complete cast iron 426 Hemi right from a Dodge dealer, no problem (except for the cost). You can not, however, buy a new car or truck with one of the old engines in it.
