Ok guys I'm looking for a tactical training video or series of videos to brush up on my skills. I just bought my first M4 style platform and its been so long since shooting one that when I went out to zero it I was nervious that I would remember how (luck for me it was like riding a bike). Heres what I'm looking at and I would like the reason for your choice if you don't mind.

1) Magpul Industries The Art of (Pistol and Rifle)
2) Make Ready with Travis Haley (Pistol and Rifle)
3) Make Ready with Paul Howe (Pistol and Rifle)
4) The NRA's Personal Defense Network dvd series

Remember I'm not looking for an academy/live instruction replacement just a brush up/refresher.

I really enjoyed DVDs 1 and 2 (I own them and the MP shotgun). I think everyone of them will be helpful to you but in person training would be ideal so I would start saving your pennies. I took Travis's handgun and carbine 1 classes and they blew the DVDs out of the water! There was also a ton of stuff covered in the live action classes I took that was not included on the DVD (Travis tailors each class depending on the skill level of the shooters involved).

I think every one of your listed DVDs would be great (not so sure about the NRA ones bec I have no experince with them) so I recommend slowly picking up each and every one of them and then going to visit all of them in person.

I would like to go to the Sig Sauer Academy in Epping NH, has anyone ever been there and if so what was your experience and thoughts of it?

Screw it I went into my bosses office told him I was taking some vacation and I'm taking my butt to a course in May! Now how will I explain where the money went to my boss at home? Ah I'll just tell her "Shut up woman I work all day to earn our money now I'm gonna treat myself" and while I think that to myself I'll say "babe I love you and because of that I will do everything in my power to make sure I have the tools and skills to protect you and our children."

All of those choices look good.

Magpul art of the tactical carbine is pretty much a must have. Professionally produced, and covers all the basics. I own the handgun dvd too.

Haven't seen Howe's dvds, but I want 'em.

If you want actual tactics, The Tactical Advantage (book and dvd) is probably the way to go.

Let me say this, all the DVD's listed are great and you will learn a lot. That is a fact.

Here's my opinion. Paul Howe reaches me better. I got more out of his video than I did the MD. His delivery just clicks more with me. That is just my opinion, and don't take that as a dis on MD. The MD vids are great and work for a lot of people, including me. However, Paul Howe's vid just seemed more directed at me. I don't know if I'm making any sense to be honest with you.

As stated before, the classes are the way to go. The videos just supplemental.

Choice 1 and 2 I found to be a great modern approach for the M4 and pistol as weapons systems. In the videos they incorporate the Jeff Cooper/ Gunsite look at the diagnostic weapon malfunction correction, instead of training to the lowest common donominator of I will tap rap bang or S.P.O.R.T.S. and hope that fixes the problem. The drills provided are surrounded more by reality and actual confrontation. These videos also do their best to add thinking and performance under stress into the training enviornment.

Paul Howe is a trainer with years of training and experience in the operational community so what I think dosent really matter. His drills are good to build a skill set. His approach in the video is to achieve the perfect stance, do a few practice draws/presentations to make sure everything is perfect, adjusts his equipment, then performs against the clock to make his time. He does this for every repetition. Again this is good to develope a skill set but IMHO not really practial to train to this standard for real life encounters.

+1 for The book the tactial advantage by Gabe Suarez. a good read.

I would put the Clint Smith thunder ranch defensive carbine/defensive pistol and Tactical Repsonse fighting pistol/ fighting rifle video series before the Paul Howe series. Clint Smith teaches a simlar slow things down approach similar to Paul Howe while incorporating verbal commands that are useful to the armed citizen / LE / Military in a Police Action type mission. Clint Smith also does a lecture before training which is informative. I know Chuck Yeager gets his fair share of internet abuse but if you can get around his my way is THE right way instead of A way there are some pearls of good training.

Paladin Press has some good hand gun series that are also worth the watch.

I probably shouldnt say this as an NRA life member but...... I would leave the NRA training video series at the bottom of the list. Watch them, but you know, after everything else...

Like some other posters have stated, Videos are great as additional training to support actual training courses and actual range time, not as a replacement.

I own 1 and 2, both good videos, but I like the haley videos a bit better for reasons I can't really articulate.

videos make 2000% more sense after you've had at least some formal instruction
