I'd be interested in reading more into that statistic. Could you post a link to where I could?

Sure thing:

This is directed to the civilian market and does not address the obvious use of vehicles in the day to day work of security and police. Such as traffic stops.

First of all the gun fight concept is where a legal to carry individual is faced with a life and death (deadly force situation that justifies the use of deadly force) such as armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, rap, car jacking, kidnaping etc.  This activities in general occur not in your home or office,..... statistically predators will take advantage of the victims need to move from vehicle to building or building to vehicle and that is when they will strike. Violent criminals can blend in with the rest of us and get in close proximity fairly easily. Criminal predators can walk right by us and we will allow it because of the public setting. Next time you go to a large shopping center sit in the parking lot for a few minutes and observe how easy it would be for a criminal predator to approach and attack you or your family. Shoppers often walk to and from their cars totally consumed by their thoughts and thinking about what they are going to do next. Next time, watch shoppers as they approach their cars fumbling for their keys. They will turn their backs and attention completely away from those nearby to load their shopping bags into the car, and get children and infants installed inside the vehicle. Most shopping center and parking lot abductions and carjacking's occur precisely at this point.

Statistics:

1. According to a study conducted by Liability Consultants Inc. of "more than 1,000 premises lawsuits between 1992 and 2001 revealed that in almost one-third of all cases reviewed, the basis of the lawsuit was a murder, rape, robbery or assault that occurred in a parking lot or garage." http://www.parkingtoday.com/articledetails.php?id=235

2. According to the latest National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, more than 1 in 10 property crimes including motor vehicle theft and property theft occur in parking lots or garages. Perhaps more alarming, from this survey, it was reported that 7.3% of all violent crimes occur in these locations. In fact, some believe this violent crime figure is conservative, with one on-going study on premises security liabilities conducted by Norman D. Bates, president of Liability Consultants Inc., estimating that as many as 40 percent of rapes and assaults take place in parking lots. - See more at: http://netwatchusa.com/car-parking-lots-a-haven-for-violent-crime/#sthash.GWyx0opp.dpuf

3. "Three years ago management conducted a survey that looked at crime statistics for a one year period on Wal-Mart properties. The survey showed that 80% of crimes at Wal-Mart were occurring in the parking lot.http://www.jrrobertssecurity.com/articles/wal-mart-parking-lot-crime.htm

4. Between 2004 and 2008 --
About 1 in 3 violent crimes occurred in or near the victim’s own home.
During this time period almost 1 in 5 violent crimes took place in open areas such as yards, playgrounds, fields, on the street or in other similar locations.
Almost two thirds of all property crimes took place in or near the home of the household members.
More than 1 in 10 property crimes occurred in parking lots or garages.
Purse snatchings and pocket pickings typically occur away from home. The most common places of occurrence were in commercial places such as restaurants, bars and other commercial buildings (39.1%) and open areas such as the street or on public transportation (28.2%). About 10% of personal thefts occurred in or near the victim’s home or the home of a friend or neighbor.

5. Rape Situation Statistics
25% of rapes take place in a parking garage or public area.
63% of rapes occur between 6 pm and 6 am
More than 50% of rapists were under the influence of drugs or alcohol when committing their crime.
Over 80% of assaults were committed without the use of a weapon.
