I can buy a M&P9mm for $350 new.  However, I want to get into USPSA matches.   Do I really need a 5" barrel to be a competitor?  Will it eventually become one of those "must have" items in the long run?  Does the extra $500 price tag make all the difference to go from a standard M&P9 to the M&P9P/L?

Thanks.

What you will find is the longer sight radius will be a plus.

This.

The 25% longer sight radius is a big plus for competition shooting. You will also get slightly higher velocities with the longer barrel.

So overall, spend an extra $500 because it's a handicap if you don't have the extra 3/4 an inch, correct?

No, you can buy whatever you want.

You asked the difference between a $350 and a $500 M&P.

I answered based on the intended use. Weapons are tools, nothing more. They do a job for the owner.

The choice is yours.
