THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I visited the youth competition section but its looks dead. My son is 6 years old and I am wanting him to get into shooting sports instead of the usual Tee Ball or soccer. Where I live its very difficult to play any type of sport without being in the "clique" as we have learned over the last 2 years he has played tee ball. Im 28 years old and starting shooting BB guns around 6 years old. I have no professional training but I hand load my ammunition and really enjoy shooting. I don't know everything there is to know about shooting but I can shoot decent groups at 100-200 yards. I bought my son a BB gun last Christmas and we have been out a handful of times and he really enjoys shooting it.

My question is, how do I get involved in a shooting club that teaches children my sons age how to shoot better. I don't know of anyone that's involved in a shooting club but I hear about them on this forum a lot. Also, What kind of rifle should I get him to start off with? His left handed but is right eye dominate so I assume he needs to learn how to shoot right handed. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I know nothing on this topic. Thanks

Check with your local 4H they may have a shooting sports team! In Many states 4H shooting sports teams compete in NRA YHEC (Youth Hunter Education national Challenge).

I'm a long time service rifle, NRA High Power, Palma and all around shooter. I started when I was 4 with a BB gun, got into "bullseye" shooting and smallbore. These are GREAT ways to enter the sport. They focus on the fundamentals, precision and repetition. Not to mention .177 pellets and .22 is cheap so practice is inexpensive. These disciplines shoot at 25yds and 50yds. Initially you need a rifle, sling, "eyes/ears" and a good attitude. These sports also focus a lot on patience too so at a young age some kids don't like standing there forever and squeezing off the perfect shot.

Here's the site you'll need: http://www.odcmp.com/

Find a local club and get started!

To answer your question about eye dominance, if he is right eye dominant he needs to train right handed. It's harder to train brain function than it is muscle memory. Later on if he gets into dynamic shooting or other shooting sports his body will always want to get a sight picture with the dominant eye.

Thanks for the info! The 4-H club here doesn't have a shooting team. The CMP looks exactly like what I was after!

What kind of .22 do you recommend? I noticed they sell the "cricket" and it look like it would fit him fine but I am worried about him out growing it too fast. I have a Remington 597 but I am leaning towards getting him a 10/22. Whats your thoughts on that?

If you want to go with a .22, you're probably looking into smallbore? In that case the best is gonna be Anschutz, check out creedmoor sports and you'll find all the equipment you could want from their site. Sako, Remington, Savage and Kimber also make great target .22s and I think Marlin. These rifles price themselves from 300ish all the way up to 3000.

BTW you can't go wrong with the 10/22 Just get him out to a range and shoot. Most likely his interest/ ability will drive your purchases.

Thanks again! I found out the closest CMP affiliated team is about an hour away so I gotta figure something out.
