THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
Hello guys. I am relatively new to the forum as well as pretty new to Gracie Jiu Jitsu. So as a sort of intro, I will tell a little about myself. I have never really trained in any kind of martial arts except, if you count that 1 week of Karate I took when I was 7. I am not very athletic, I am a small guy 5'0" 145lbs and have gotten straight shit about it since I was in the 1st grade and all the way through high school. I am now 19 and am a full time college student. I have only been to about a dozen classes or so but, it is honesty the only thing I look forward to all week. I was going Tuesday mourning, Tuesday night, Thursday mourning and Saturday mourning. The "dojo" (I am not sure if this is the correct name) is now changing the schedule so I can now go six times a week. The "dojo" (again not sure if this is correct) I go to also offers Judo, Karate, Kick boxing and yoga, I have been wanting to do Judo but, a few years ago I got a back injury. That being said I have chronic back pain so the sensei's are a bit weary about some of the throws I would be doing . Anyways gentlemen, I just thought I would share a little about myself and getting some advice. I plan on making this my new "e-home" if you guys don't mind so I will see you guys around.

I'd see a doctor and get their opinion about the severity of your back injury and if you can aggravate it or make it worse with Judo or BJJ before continuing.

I have, the diagnosis was a stress fracture. He basically said I could do what I want until it hurts and then stop. I do plan on going back though and talking to him further. With the JJ I have been doing I have not had any problems, even with some of the take downs. I appreciate the general concern.

ETA: He also said that it was incurable and I will have it for the rest of my life.

BJJ really works your core. I think it could actually improve your condition, by building up your strength.

I'd suggest you focus on the BJJ for now, maybe add in the yoga.

I'm 47 and a blue belt.

You might try adding in some weight lifting to strengthen your core & help support your back. I have had good results from foam rolling and stretching for recovery from workouts.

Find a good acupuncturist in your area to help you with your back. Looks like there are some good ones in Virginia. I highly recommend Dr. Tan and his students.

THIS

The Chinese have been doing acupuncture for 3,000 years... because it works.

The oldest know use of acupuncture was on the "ice man" recovered from the Alps . . . he died about 6,000 years ago IIRC.
