My two boys have been doing TKD. Ages 9 and 11. I've wanted to transfer them to BJJ, but they just recieved braces.

Can you "roll" or wrestle with braces? How is this typically handled in a kid's BJJ class?

Get them a mouthpiece and they will be fine.

There is a kid at the gym I go to and he rolls with braces. He has a special mouth guard for braces.

Pardon me because I am completely uneducated on this topic, but does BJJ require grabbing at or inside the mouth at all? If the kids were just rolling around on mats it seems highly unlikely that their mouth would get snagged on anything.

The concern is protecting the child's mouth from being injured by the braces. It is inevitable that at some point the mouth will get struck by a flailing arm or leg or an accidental headbutt.

Sometimes there are impacts. That could be a problem. But also, often a choke won't be applied to the neck but to the chin or teeth. You can get a lot of pressure against the teeth and jaw.

I've felt considerable force against my teeth on many occasions.

A mouth-guard will protect the inside of your mouth from getting all cut up.

As far as the pressure, Its going to happen, Worst case if they feel uncomfortable from it, tell them to Tap.

Jiu Jitsu is not about hurting your training partner, Its about learning technique, and flowing with your training partners.

I am an assistant instructor at my gym, and teach the kids class.

Worst case a brace comes off a tooth, which is also not a big deal.

Have them get a Mouth-guard, or a special one and they will be good to go!

BTW good transition from TKD to BJJ
