I'm going to take some liberties with the fact that I'm saying this and haven't taken Krav Maga.....however, last time I checked it's not a SPORT at all. It's hand to hand survival. There's no such thing as "unhonorable" moves. |

Atleast that the way I understand it. |

Just had to put in my 2 cents.
Ive been taking Krav Maga for a month now and I was sold on it after my first session. I've been reading about Commando KM a long time and wished it was offered sooner in the area I live in. Researched online and I could only find only one certified Commando Krav Maga class/school/club offered in WNY and it was too far away for me to travel on any given day, until a class opened up in my area. I've have over 32 years experience between the military police and corrections and no other style of defensive tactic/self defense comes close to what Krav Maga has to offer. I've dabbled in a little bit of this and that over the years but was always dissatisfied with the style and training. I wasn't interested in belts, degrees or katas. I wanted something that I could take from the class room to the real world of the unexpected, not train for a match. I love it because it's a reality based combat art that basically uses gross motor skills to execute the moves. The classes are small and fast paced. After warm ups, shadow box/kicking, you often go 0-60 on the pads and on each other. (I've personally have added heavy bag work on my on time to practice the strikes and kicks) It is a physically demanding class. You need lots of cardio training outside class. I had a knee replacement 5 yrs ago and minor work on the other knee. So I do wear knee pads, the gel filled kinds that volleyball players wear, small profile. I haven't had any problems so far. I'm the oldest in the class (57yrs old) and fairly new. You practice with newbees and the experienced. Everyone is welcoming and you don't feel like a fish out of water. You can fit right away with little to no experience. The only safety rule is "don't get hurt" My instructor/s communication and demonstration skills are outstanding, one on one instructions. My instructor really cares about what he is doing and what we are learning. He often reminds us that this is not a martial art it is a combat art, meant to incapacitate/debilitate or if the situation arises to kill in self defense. If your not comfortable with that possibility, then maybe this is not what you should be taking. As a added bonus my instructor is also a certified physical trainer. He tailors the "combat" fitness and kettlebell training that he offers to enhance our Krav Maga. Hope that helps in your decision to take it. You won't regret it! I see on another thread that you have taken it. It's been almost 6-7 months. Are you still training as of this date? |

SO... Finally one good thing about the southern left coast.
Seriously, I watched a demonstration when I was in England last year. I havent seen much that can counter Krav Maga as far as quick and sudden responses. I was impressed with the sudden-ness of the kicks, grabs, and throws. Makes segal (Not that he doesnt already) look like a joke. Wish they had it on the right coast near me. I'd sign up in a hot minute |

The only thing I don't like is the fact my forearms hurt like someone is sawing them off after doing blocks all night.
But I have FUN and I can almost say I could hold myself in a fight, as long as it is a 10 yr old girl. One opf the other things that I get a kick out of KM is... we have some drop dead GORGEOUS women in the class... I feel kinda silly hitting them. |

I saw many in the Boxing Club. I was training in BJJ, and was sometimes distracted by the women taking the boxing / kickboxing classes nearby. We get some hot women in BJJ, but not so many. I guess they don't want to roll with sweaty guys, but the BJJ would be much more useful then boxing or kickboxing for women's self defense. |

I just took my first Krav class yesterday.
Let me preface this by saying I love weight lifting and training for heavy activity, but this DOES REQUIRE STAMINA. I stopped twice in the 2 1-hour sessions. And my abs are killing me. But I will go again since this may lead to future training opportunities....if I keep my motivation up. My instructor asked me if i was left or right handed, and I told him I was comfortable throwing punches either way. I'm certain he believes me now |

I'm certain he believes me now I used to base my workouts at the gym around squats, benchpress, deadlift,... and it worked great for me using the starting strength program. After my first krav class I came to find out that stuff is great, but weightlifting is no substitute for pushups, burpees, planking, etc. Now that I have been doing 100+ pushups every time I go to the gym along with crunches and planking, I can feel the payoff when I go to class. |
