No ccw allowed at oak park mall. walking around saturday afternoon headed back to hair salon to get wife and bam. robbery at radio shack. guy bolts out right at me and baby in stroller. No time to panic just Deer in headlights I see he is concealing a piece under a hoodie as he is running. i only have time to get out of the way. 3 radio shack employees run after him. I say to myself, its only property no one is hurt let him go not worth the trouble.

I guess my question is how do you make small and get the f out of situations when all you have is a 3 inch blade and no desire to go superman? what is a good way to learn retreat without endangering yourself or others?

sounds like you did what was best in the moment. you had the baby with you, so you couldn't do anything by minimize the danger to him/her. staying out of the way, backing up, making your "footprint" smaller.

situational awareness is key, though. always knowing multiple exits from wherever you are at the moment is key.

glad you got through the situation with no harm to you and yours.

Done good. Your situational awareness and your asessment are spot on. You have a baby to raise. Don't get between him and his exit. Those employees are crazy chasing after an armed guy unarmed. They are employees and the store is insured for that sort of thing. Certainly not worth risking your life over a store's inventory. Now if he was freakin' nuts and was after someone's life the situation would have been different.

Get out of his tunnel vision and you won't exist. Pick up on what his mission is, and you will see where he is going. Don't be in that path.

People forget all about the physiology of stress unless it happens to them. A bad guy will have this going on too, and you can exploit it easier than you think.

This is precisely why "getting off of the X" actually works. Unless you end up in a confined space with the baddy, he prolly won't notice you.

You did good. Your first responsibility is to your baby. The perp's argument was with Radio Shack, not you.

Food for thought: Sounds like this went by quickly; given a little more time, it would be advantageous to put yourself between the baby and the threat. If the guy turns his attention on you, make him regret it.

My old karate teacher would lecture new students, part of his speech went something like this:

He would stand in front of the basketball baseline (we practiced in a gym) and say "your best bet is to avoid trouble. Run if you have to. But someday this line might be your mother, wife, or a baby carraige. On that day you cannot run. Prepare accordingly"

At some point, you start training yourself.

I am in the back parking lot of the local hardware store. I have lived in the neighborhood thirty years. I "know" the staff.

Before going in, I decide not to carry.

As I am at the checkout counter, a fight develops between two customers and the owner's son with people jumping over the counter and swinging away.

In order, but not the order I should have followed. 1. I looked for anything with an edge. (I was trained in escrima, knife fighting and even entrenching tool fighting.). 2. I looked at the aggressor customer hands for any weapons. 3. I check my exit and ran out the back door, got in the car and drove off.

The next day, I heard the backstory and was told I did the right thing in running out by the owner, owner's son, and the staff. The police handled the situation.

I should have skipped step one.

The self training is situational awareness and testing yourself once in a while like "what if right now, the following happened . . . ."
