Hey guys. I always shoot at angeles shooting range in southern California. I have been seeing the southern California golden bears shooting club at fort angeles next to the regular range. It is a 100 yard high power rifle match range. I would like to start participating in their matches. Any of you guys shoot their? Are there any other high power competitions around here that go to 600 yards? How do you earn marksmen badges? I would like to start competing with my colt hbar with the cary handle on it. Any general or ammunition advice? I handload so ammo choice is not an issue. My rifle has a 1:9 twist. I would like to start getting into the high power competition scene. Thanks guys!

The Santa Margarita Gun Club holds Across the Course (200/300/600 yards) matches, Mid Range Matches (600 yards) and Long Range Matches (1000 yards).

The matches are held on Camp Pendleton.

Our website is www.smgunclub.org.

We are in the process of updating our schedule.

After firing 240 rounds in competition, the NRA will give you a classification.  Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert, Master, High Master.  You can move up in classification by firing 240 rounds in a higher classification.

At 600 yards with the AR, you will want to shoot 80's.  You will need a faster twist than 1:9.

Sir, FWIW I shot at SMGC some years ago while on temporary assignment to North Island NS.  Got concerned about having an "unregistered" assault rifle at the time so I never went back and kept my rifle with a friend in Az until my TAD was over.

The response already posted regarding classifications is accurate but I'm curious from you comment "marksman badges" if you don't actually mean "leg" medals won in EIC competitions.  Rather than give the whole spiel about EIC matches just check out the CMP web site, google will get you there.

I've used a Colt Hbar in HP competitions for many years originally with a 1in7 twist, later 1in 7.7.  A float tube is helpful as are 1/4X 1/4 sights for across the course competition.  For 600yd the 80gr bulllets are a real advantage but the 77s are OK but require better wind reading skills due to the lower BC.  HTH, 7zero1.

You can shoot reduced course matches at Angeles with the Golden Bears or the LARC club. Matches are on Saturdays I think.

In addition to SMGC, there is BRRC that shoots up above Castaic, and Ojai Valley Gun Club.

The Service Rifle course is on their respective calendars that can be found on their web sites.
