Any guess as to how old the upper receiver is on this rifle. It's almost grey in color: the pic is a crappy phone pic. If it's still holding X's and 10's rested with M855 ammo @ 100 yrds, but just.  Should I be considering replacing the upper since I have ordered a new barrel and getting a new BCG to have matched. How do you know when you need to replace an upper? Sorry I removed my first post because, when I read it it came across like a dick.

I'm pretty sure you should be shooting 55grn ammo with that barrel.

Don't take it apart.  Sell the upper as is if you don't want it.

I believe an upper receiver will pretty much last forever under anything close to normal use.  I've never heard of one wearing out and needing to be replaced.

the log book on my team upper goes back 5 barrels... probably more before that. 25k rds or more... if the color bothers you have it ceracoated black. but it is fine.

Thank you guys for replying. I'm going to forget about the upper then. Everything seems solid on the rifle. The only reason I mentioned the color and I should have just plain asked this. Could this upper be off of a military or LE rifle? I thought all commercial AR rifle U/L were flat blk in color way back when..

Last.

The barrel on this rifle has three lands and 1 in 7 twist. Who made it? I'm having hard time IDing the manufacturer. The guy I got this from said that WOP assembled this rifle  upper many years ago. I think he sent in these parts and they did the work. I cannot see the barrel shank because of the FF tube to check for WOP stamping they id their stuff with.

Yep. Most likely a pacnor. The upper itself could be a surplus mil upper.

The color of the upper wont hurt your scores, I wouldn't worry about it.

I shot with this during my first time at Perry at the SAFS. Never shot past 100yds before going that week. Only shot 2 matches ever before going also, 1 of those was the week before Perry at my local reduced range. I was a noob of the highest order. I didn't even have a spotting scope. This thing rattled so bad I thought it was going to fall apart on me. As long as the barrel isn't shot out, I'd run it.

I ended up 3 points from a bronze medal in the EIC match after SAFS with it. I also was 3 points from a bronze (again w/o the use of a spotting scope) during the JCG match.

During the JCG match when I walked up to the line I asked the guy shooting a Garand next to me what dope he was using and copied that for my rifle. I'm scared to go back because I know I won't have beginners luck this time.

This is the rattle trip I used during the EIC match.

I shot the rest of CMP week with my Service Grade SA from the CMP

Ha! I saw your picture of the M16A2 and thought "That looks just like the POS I shot!"

In fact, that IS the POS I shot.

Did I? I know we were talking around that time about when we went. Dam I'm getting old! Sorry about that.

Are you going this year? Not sure if I am. I want to, but after my open heart surgery my hands shake little. I'm not sure if I am safe enough to be on the line and with the long walks out to the line, that will be a lot for my heart as well.
