Well after seeing my scores go down from the 490's down to the 350's over the course of 3 months I have to say I was racking my brain. I checked and double checked my loads nothing. I only had 929 rounds through the new barrel but my groups were all over into the 8 ring. I checked sling tension wore the same shoes etc. As i grew more frustrated it dawned on me maybe im at that point where im gettin old and loosin the edge. I checked all the set screws(or at least I thought I did) nothing unusual. My frustration grew worse and my ego was suffering. until yesterday at the range while chasing my groups all over the bull I took a break and lit up a smoke. A older gentleman on the adjacent range came over and asked if he could bum a smoke cause his wife dosent let him smoke. We got to talking anf I told him of my dilemma. He said do you mind if I check it out? I replied go ahead Ive tried everything. within in less than a minute he pointed out the wiggle on my front sight post. I was flaberghasted I overlooked such an obvious detail and immedietly retightened the lock screw. the first 5 shots from the prone were right in the X ring again! I thanked him greatly and offered him another smoke. Back in Buissness. The Moral of the story dont overlook the simple things.

I don't smoke, but if someone had done that for me I'd have at least given him the pack.

Sir, it's said that most of us have to learn the hard way, and I'm no exception. I have many such stories mostly from when I was shooting an M1A when I started in HP. I'll always remember how the military teams took care of each other and wished I had an experienced shooter to guide me. Anyway I didn't but as a result I'll offer advise once in a while if a shooter looks like he needs some help but I don't want to offend or give the appearance of a "know it all". Most of the time I get the "don't bother me" look. So I keep my mouth shut. It takes two. JMHO 7zero1.

Not shooting related, but you can make yourself feel better at my expense.

I was 16 and I just finished putting a junk yard rear end in my 1978 Lebaron $500 car. Took it for a test drive, everything was great but i was vibration at higher speeds. Drove around some more and the vibration was getting worse and worse.I was getting upset and slowed down and made the turn back into the subdivision. Just then I heard a awful crack and my car felt like it fell down and was making pavement to metal contact. I watched both rear wheels roll on by me and actually took out part of the neighbors landscaping. In my rush to finish installing the rear end, I only finger tightened a few wheel nuts.

Had to do the walk of shame back to the house and back dragging the 3.5 ton jack down the street to put the wheels back on the car. Had to apologize to the neighbor and buy a landscape timber for the decorative fence one of the wheels destroyed.

To this day anytime I take a wheel off of a vehicle, the lug nuts are not just tightened, but torqued in the correct sequence and I double check.

During the Fleet and All Navy matches this past April my LPO had to put on 26 click's of right windage for a no wind zero (I didn't know this until later).... He also started to have issues with his bolt not locking. After a few alibis happened in the rapids I took a look at it. The carrier key was mangled and split. The navy armorer replaced the key and checked the rifle over to make sure the gas tube was right. The next day was the EIC match so he go with the data he had and what he knew. 200 slow, working fine, 200 rapid got thru it, 300 rapid jam, 300 rapid alibi jam again. Since he'll be in the pits forever prior to the long line they take it to the van again. When he made it out of the pits the rifle was waiting for him. Result: The barrel nut was not torqued properly and when he put sling pressure on the free float tube he literally pulled everything out of alignment.

Looks like he was going to shoot for a zero again during the match. I was shooting well so we stayed for the second "All Navy" week and his scores increased dramatically. His no wind zero also jumped much closer to mechanical zero as well. This was his first match experience, he'll be on the right track for next year. During Perry (pistol) he earned a Bronze leg so he's got the bug for chasing his Distinguished badges.

We inspected all the rifles when we returned back to the shop.

Yeah, when things go sideways, you have to be confident and start looking for equipment problems. If you let off a nice shot and it's not where you think it should be, start looking for the solution. Nobody goes from 490 to 350 without something major going on. Trust your shooting not your equipment.

Being an NCO i have heard all to well it was the rifle not the shooter. So I naturally figured it was me despite the fact that my 1903 a3 shot a 446 at the local 1903 match when all this was goin on. old habits I suppose. Chris
