THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I am just getting started in HP I don't have the money for a 200-$300 for a scope stand this season. Is there a cheapish one I can get just for shooting prone that will work until I can get one next season?.

anything more around the 50 dollar range or less. just a simple low tripod capable of holding up a 5.25 pound scope.

I bought the 80mm Konus scope and it came with a small tripod. If all else fails, this tripod would work for the prone.

I also bought the Jim Owens scope stand. I would not recommend it. They are selling for $140 and I bought it because it was half the cost of the nice scope stands (like the type in the link above.) Save your money for a quality product: Buy once, Cry once.

The $160 for the one above looks like a good place to start, and you can always buy the extension rods later to use it for sitting and offhand shooting.

"Save your money for a quality product: Buy once, Cry once."

This. Beg or borrow one until you can afford a quality stand. There is no problem borrowing equipment at the matches I attend, guys are happy to help out.

I'm partial to the Giraud stand myself.

Dave

Sir, while I've always advocated the "save your money..., buy once, cry once" mantra, I too realize that sometimes just to get by while you're saving your money you need something in the interim. When I started out trying to borrow someone else's scope/scope stand was always a hassle because the people able to loan equipment were usually squadded on the same relay as I.

That said, the old Freeland style scope stands are available used, check out the equipment exchange. I used one for years until I broke the main arm portion, which I still have waiting for a friend to weld it for me. Champion Shooters Supply in New Albany, Ohio still carries that line at probably some of the best prices for new equipment. I use a Ray Vinn scope stand now, probably the best most versatile and stable scope stand on the market, but not cheap. The problem with cheap stands is that they're either easy to break or to narrow to allow the shooter to use them in the prone position without knocking them over. Most scope makers offer some form of tripod for their product, check out the web site of the scope maker that you have. HTH, 7zero1.

Sir, I need to check out what parts of my old Freeland stand I still have so perhaps we can make some arrangement. If you're interested send me an IM. 7zero1, out.

Sir, for the money it looks like just what the Dr. ordered! I hope it is as low as you need when shooting from prone. FWIW I have the saddle head and zoom head mounts from my old Freeland stand. I also have all the extension rods, ground spike, and weight. A replacement freeland bipod from Champion shooters Supply for $60.00 would make it complete less scope. HTH, 7zero1.

That's a pretty expensive scope to attach to a cheap stand (averaging more than the usual Kowa 80 most have on the line). When you get your full-position stand later, get a good one. The Freeland, while classic, isn't really anymore. Especially for an 80. You need a STABLE stand to get the most use out of that scope.

yea , I have a good Bogen tripod that I have used for years for general observing, now i am getting into high power I need i one for prone shooting. I hope the vortex works good enough to get me through this season. Next season I will probably look into a ray-vin scope stand.

You'll want one for all positions. Especially if you ever shoot reduced course.

No the range i shoot at does not do reduced course matches. I just need something to help me read the wind and allow me to see the spotters at 3&6. next season i will plan on upgrading. I definitely need one it just I don't have the money this year. So just trying to make through. this season.

I have to laugh at this. When I first started out shooting matches, I bought the 80mm Konus from one place and bought that stand Jim Owens' sells. I didn't want to spend a lot of money on equipment, just in case I didn't keep shooting (hate to throw away money like that, even though I do it too much). The stand worked for me, after replacing the thumb screws with something better and using a 5 pound weight at the bottom to keep it stable in the wind. But after too many pinched fingers, I finally upgraded to the Ray-Vin stand. Really like that stand. The Giraud stand is nice also. I still have the Konus scope. I haven't had any problems with it. Once I do, I'll upgrade to something better.

I tried a little tripod stand once, but I couldn't get it low enough for prone.

Well i got my vortex scope stand. I think it might work for now. If a hunter was going to pack a smaller scope and a small tripod in a pack. I would want this. I d wish it went lower. but I think it will work pretty good. it has a neat easy fine adjustment knob after you set the course one in a general area. IT should get me until i can get a goood RAY VIN
