I've only been to two local matches and they use a plastic 55 gallon drum with the lid cut off and some foam/carpet in it. It is staked to the ground and seems to work pretty good. It also works well to shoot off of.

We use plastic 55 gal drums as mentioned with a 2x4 frame at about a 45 degree angle. The drums have carpet inside on the bottom and holes drilled in the bottom corner for drainage. The frame can be pretty rough.

At Rio Salado (home of the Superstition Mountain Mystery 3 Gun match) we also use 55 gallon plastic barrels with wood ramps, sometimes with a square cutout on the side to make it easier for smaller shooters to get the gun in. For pistols we use a small file box with wood insert. We line the ramps with carpet, but this gets mixed reviews - some like the protection for their gun finish, but of course it can get wet, can melt onto a hot muzzle, and in the case of a 1911 pistol can sometimes sweep the safety off. We are considering going back to bare wood. In ALL cases we nail or screw down the abandonment receptacles.

We use 55 gal drums with the top cut off and a bag of cement at the bottom to weight it down.
