Subject: US Marines Eye 3-Gun Competition For Training
MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. — A Marine’s rifle jams during combat. Rather than waste precious time, he throws it down, pulling out the pistol from his drop holster. When that’s out of ammo, he scans the ground, picks up an AK47 from a slain Taliban, and uses that to fire on the enemy.

This combat scenario is not far-fetched. It could happen to you. But are you ready for it?

Experts from Weapons Training Battalion at Marine Corps Base Quantico believe a new trend in shooting competition, termed multi-gun, could be the key to better prepping Marines for combat. The battalion is looking to push this training far and wide across the Corps, to a base near you.

Multi-gun exercises combine marksmanship with a fast-paced obstacle course. Picture rushing through a range, shooting at various targets and using multiple weapons — a rifle, pistol and shotgun, for example. To heighten the realism and boost difficulty, you may be weighed down in full combat gear.

No multi-gun stage is identical to the next. All must be performed as fast as possible, but also as accurately as possible. With the belief that competition breeds excellence, Marines are pitted against one another to see who can earn the best time. Go too slow, and you waste precious seconds. Go too fast, and you could risk missing targets and being docked additional time anyway.

These exercises can improve a Marine’s speed, accuracy and decision-making skills, battalion officials say. But what’s key is that this training is also fun, said battalion Sgt. Maj. David Devaney.

“I think people don’t like to associate training with fun,” Devaney said. “But you can have both.”

The battalion’s goal is to improve marksmanship across the service, battalion commander Col. Tim Armstrong said, and multi-gun training and competition can do just that.

Although my section is standing by for this to happen so we can form a 3 gun team and shoot on the Corps dime. We have much better ways to train our Marines
In the real world off-campus, good marksmanship trumps good will.

I dont know if you guys watch the show Top Shots ibut n the new season on the blue team there is a guy named Ashley Spurlin. He is special forces
Air Force Combat Controller , a little over a year ago he started shooting 3 gun with us at our monthley match . When he first started it was ugly , he could not hit anything but he kept comeing out every month and he was a good guy and everyone liked him and he wasnt afraid to asked for help .
So everyone helped him and in no time he improved greatly , he still gives us credit for improving his shooting skills to allow him to go to top shots and contacts us before each show to make sure we watch. If you met him you would like him ,he really is a top notch guy serving our country.

Before 911, Quantico held 3 gun matches. Dont know if this is still the case.

they had one in Quantico summer 2010 put on by WTBN - I went down to shoot and it was a DAMN good shoot (but got rained out that day - damn lightning in 5)

They even provided weapons and ammo if you didn't have your own (or partial - bring a pistol and carbine, you can use their shotgun)

Every stage was run by Marines - they went nice and smooth

LaRue was there giving out free chow

*edit*

reading through the article - I can't see it as a BAD thing as long as it's taken as a combat evolution and not a gaming evolution - more trigger time is ALWAYS better and, give Marines something to compete in and we'll kill ourselves trying. Running issue gear hard and fast on some awesome stages (lets face it - military ranges can get away with way more than you ever could at a civilian range also) and hell, it'll help us beyond what we're pushing now.

and R0N, you KNOW that none of the grunts will get to go play on the 3-gun teams.... just like we couldn't shoot on the rifle teams (at least I couldn't )

Were you there when the firemen were shooting? We took an engine down and shot all the rounds. That was my first experience with 3 gun, and sadly my last. There doesn't seem to be alot of events in the area that I can make it to.

According to the guys at WTBN, They are going to try and run at least two matches a year on base that are open to the public.
