I simply do not shoot enough. I can shoot a airgun in the backyard. Would I benifit from getting ar and pistol to shoot more often?

Yes you would, especially for things like fundamentals of marksmanship. Also, a large portion of being good at shooting is regular structured dry fire.

Dryfire to work on fundamentals, air rifle or pistol to confirm and improve them, then anything else will be cake.

Yessir.

Buy one of the surplus $100 Daisy 853s from the CMP (Lothar Walther barrel), some match  pellets, and shoot 10m Bulls.

What h your shooting skills skyrocket, after you master the fundamentals.

Damn I should have waited a few days to see your suggestion.

Yes.  I shot on a rifle team in high school, a good match airgun will FORCE you to have good trigger control and follow-through.  We typically had one or two matches a year that required us to shoot air rifles instead of or in addition to our .22's, and it was fairly common to see our average scores jump a few points when going back to the .22's after shooting the air rifles for a few weeks.  I'm actually surprised the coach didn't have us practicing with the air guns every week in addition to the .22's (we shot matches every Thursday, so he may have wanted us to concentrate on the .22's, we'd have to take a week or two off of matches to prepare for the air rifle matches).
