Anybody know of any advanced driving course open to civilians?

Im talking high speed, defensive driving (and by defensive I dont mean looking left and right twice before you go).

I feel like one would be more likely to use advanced defensive driving skills then shooting skills.

I know Blackwater/US Training Center/Academi or what ever the fuck theyre called now, offers a class in counter-terror driving, but its closed to civilians.

If anyone knows of anything open to civies Id appreciate it.

Thanks.

Try OEX or BSR. Not sure if they are open to civ though...

BSR looked really promising, but at about 2Gs for a 2 day class, its a bit over my budget.

Any others out there?

I took a "counter carjacking" class from Global Tactical Training Group in Georgia a couple years back. Day 1 was all driving (and some airsoft to demonstrate why you don't shoot and drive). Day 2 was shooting in and around the vehicle.

There wasn't a lot of "high speed" driving and we didn't do the skid pad or anything, but we did practice some stuff at higher speeds. Day 2 had a little bit of exposure to working as a team, but was mainly to emphasize the need to communicate in the event that shit goes sideways when you have someone else with you.

I found the class to be worthwhile and it definitely wasn't the "fantasy camp" that you see a lot these days.

Here's a little bit of video I took during the class:

Interesting they don't teach shuffle steering?

There were 3 EVOC instructors on hand. They talked to us about it briefly, but they all thought that the quick hand over hand method was better.

It took me forever to master shuffle steering, and hated it. Once I got it, I won't go back. I convert all my students when we teach. Fun to have competitions.

I tried it briefly on my own and didn't like it, of course, I never attempted to get good at it. There was some maneuver that the EVOC guys were saying was nearly impossible to do with shuffle steer. I can't quite remember the details though.

Most likely rear precision steering. Gotta hold the tiller.

There are a handful in the northeast, if you are willing to drive a bit to school.

A pure driving school that isn't security related is Skip Barber in NW CT. Bar none, the best *driving* school out there, IMHO. Anything from 1 day clinics to full on race program.

A little farther north in NH is Team O'Neil and is another great school.

Advance Driving & Security Inc. has a few civilian courses, as well.

Ford's performance driving school, plus winter driving schools (Bridgestone) and off-road rough terrain (Land Rover).

Most Americans take or get absolutely NO post-graduate driving training once they get their license out of high school or basic driver training.

Miller Speedway in Utah allows you to drive your own car on the track on specified Wednesdays.

Vehicle Dynamics Institute, Tony Scotti's place in New Jersey.

All of the serious driving courses are pretty expensive. The cost reflects the infrastructure involved in the cars and the track, the years of experience of the instructors and the marketability of the program.
Do not attempt. Trained driver on a closed course.

When I was looking for driving courses most of the interesting ones ran about $1,000 per day.
They supply the cars and the track and that probably gets expensive.
