THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
I am about to buy a target and stand from www.bigdogsteel.com. I was wondering if anyone here has any personal experience with this brand. I only plan to shoot them with 5.56mm at 50-200 yards.

On another note, it's a pain in the ass finding a range locally that will allow me to shoot these.

I have heard alot of good things about them on a local forum. I know that when it comes to steel tragets that speed kills more than caliber. I have some home made ones from AR500 that are 3/4 and can take just about anything. Do a search online Im sure you'll get alot about Big Dog Steel.

The steel as good as any other AR500, meaning it will show some damage shooting 5.56 at 50 yds. Also like many spring loaded targets it is tough to see it activate though the scope. Either it doesn't move enough or it returns so fast you can't tell. If you slightly loosen the bolts that attach the target you will get more of a ring when you hit it.

Good to know, I plan on shooting at 100-200 yards most of the time.

I got 2 pieces from them, the optional 1/2" ones. I like it but the plates will get small dings after a little use. I use it primarily with 5.56, 5.45 and 9mm under 25 yd. Might explain the dings

Tip: get some hardened spare bolts and keep them with you and a wrench. The bolts they give you are not hardened and will get shoot out. Interesting to see what happens when a 12 gauge slugs flattens them to nothing.

Edit: i got their stand and holders as well. They are angled down and so far no ricochet back at me.

Interesting design, similar to the r&r targets but with a smaller target face. For 3 gun use 8" really is minimum for anything past 200 yds where something like this is really usefull. Problem for personal use is the 60 pound weight. Carrying that target 400 yds wouldn't be fun.

I would love a lightweight quick setup reactive steel for shooting in the desert. Closest thing I have seen that comes close to this is the MGM electronic flash target. While the steel itself isn't movin you still get a good indication of a hit.

Can't the hit be heard from 200 yards or less away?

Sometimes you can hear the hit if the steel is hanging loose and it acts like a tuning fork. But if you have it bolted tight to a stand it won't vibrate enough to hear.

Also if there are multiple shooters on the line it can be difficult to hear.

Right now I don't think there is a perfect target. Price, reliability with multiple calibers, weight/portability, and clear indication of hits.

Best for hits, reliability, and portability isAR 15 targets electronic target biggest problem I see is price and I have no idea if they work as well as advertised.

But I am getting way off topic. Big dog steel is gtg as well as wideners and MGM with MGM probably the most expensive of the three. If you can wait until the monthly special is what you want the prices arnt too bad

I have five pieces from Bigdog steel and they are all pretty good stuff. I also have the SH target but I have not used it yet.
