Hey guys I am looking around to see if there are any schools out there that are actually worth it to go to. I am getting out of the Marine Corps shortly and looking at doing some more training but dont want to waste my time if im not going to get a certificate that means something to employers. Is there anyway of knowing if a school out there is actually sought by LEO or PMC organizations?

Any of the big name schools look good to prospective agency employers. There isn't one in particular that does. If there is a person at the respective agency who likes a certain instructor, it might help you out to take a class from that instructor.

Look at training from a bigger picture. Firearms/tactics training is great and you should have it. However, it's only a small part of law enforcement. Classes in Interview/Interrogation, crime scene processing, DWI/DUI arrest skills, report writing, drugs, driving, and such are of much greater importance to a department than firearms training.

Stop thinking like a certificate collector. Start thinking of developing all your skills. That's the reason for training....not possession of more certificates.

I could be way off, but places like Defensive Edge issue certificates and they are most often used to satisfy POST requirements. my guess is very few accredited instructors wouldn't meet similar requirements.

All the major training companies issue certificates upon conclusion of their training. There is no "national accreditation" standard per se. The various states have POST standards (or whatever the state calls it) of some sort. Some states will recognize training from other states. And, just because it's not POST approved doesn't mean that the department won't look at it as a valuable skill.

There really is no way to answer you question. You need to find out what the requirements are for your prospective employer and then start searching for training that meets their requirements. Most training will make you more marketable.

My .02,

NRA LE Instructor courses are "recognized" across the board, so to speak. I know of a couple of contracts out there teaching military where the company stated that the NRA LE cert's where sought after and listed as approved courses to meet the hiring requirements. What you need to do is get some courses and gain experience teaching, whether it be at a PD, private company, security, etc. Once you gain some experience you can apply to companies that hold DoS contracts (an example) and attend the BFFOC course. If you are going to be a firearms instructor in support of the WPS program, the BFFOC is required. The cert is good for five years and really opens doors. In order to be "sponsored" to attend the class and be bio approved, the candidate has to have previous instructor experience, ranging from as little as one year up to five. Hope this helps.
